Despite Anthony Davis' recent hand injury, teams across the NBA are still showing interest in the Dallas Mavericks' star big man. These franchises haven't learned the lesson that Davis can't stay on the floor, and Mavs fans have learned this lesson the hard way.
Davis has only played in 29 games since being traded to the Mavericks last February, and every time that he begins to play well, he seems to go down with another injury. As a Maverick, he suffered an adductor strain, detached retina, calf strain, and ligament damage in his hand, and his health has ultimately led to his downfall in Dallas.
The Mavericks are on track to miss the playoffs for the third time in four years this season, and much of this falls upon Davis not being able to stay healthy. Many other key Mavericks have battled injuries over the last year as well, including Kyrie Irving tearing his ACL, but Davis has been among the least dependable on the roster.
Anthony Davis' next team is in for an injury rollercoaster
He hasn't even played more than five games in a row since being traded to the Mavericks, and fans are fed up with him not being able to stay on the court. The fact that Luka Doncic is dominating for the Los Angeles Lakers makes Davis' durability much more frustrating, and seemingly the entire city is ready for the Mavs to move on.
The Mavericks have been shopping Davis in trade talks since the moment that Nico Harrison was fired in November, and surprisingly, the phones are still ringing in Dallas about the 10-time All-Star. Even with Davis set to be out until March, teams like the Toronto Raptors and Atlanta Hawks are interested in making a move for him.
His trade value has sunk significantly due to his calf and hand injuries this season, but the trade chatter around him actually surged following his left-hand injury. Davis elected to not receive surgery, meaning that he could return to the floor in March, and this would give him plenty of time to ramp up for the playoffs on his new squad.
Davis tends to avoid surgery when he can, and him not being out for the remainder of the season may have quietly saved the Mavericks when it comes to trading him.
If he were set to be out all year, no one would want to bring him in. With him being nearly 33 years old, bringing him in is the definition of a win-now move. Teams across the league believe that he can leave a major impact on the Eastern Conference playoff race depending on where he lands, but all of these decision-makers are forgetting what the Mavs know better than anyone.
Anthony Davis has an extremely hard time staying on the floor, and even though he is one of the best big men in the NBA when healthy, you can never count on that. The playoffs are all about being healthy and getting hot at the right time, and the potential Davis suitors may be in for a rough awakening.
