Mavericks' Vsevolod Ishchenko decision is better than it looks

21-year-old forward Vsevolod Ishchenko will play for Lokomotiv Kuban in Russia next season rather than for the Dallas Mavericks. Dallas traded for Ishchenko's draft rights in a draft-night trade with the Los Angeles Lakers earlier this summer, and he quickly became a fan favorite during Summer League.

While this decision may seem disappointing on the surface, especially after seeing how well he played at Summer League, this move is much better than it looks.

Why Ishchenko fits the Mavericks' young core

His connective passing, energy, physicality, and defense at 6-foot-8 were all on display in Las Vegas, and many Mavs fans immediately pushed for the team to sign him to the active roster. He was one of the most exciting players on the Summer League roster, and he looked like someone who would play in the NBA one day.

Dallas needs as many quality young players around Cooper Flagg as they look to retool the roster for the new era, and Seva seemed like he would be a great fit for just that. Masai Ujiri also historically covets versatile wings, making Ishchenko an intriguing project for the Mavericks.

Despite the undeniable potential fit on this year's roster as a developmental guy, it made much more sense to keep him in Russia to grow his game rather than throwing him into the NBA right away. The path to sign him also wasn't going to be easy, and they would've been forced to waive someone to create a roster spot for him.

Seva's agent believes this was for the best

There was always a chance that Ishchenko was going to be a draft-and-stash prospect, and this belief was confirmed by Nafiset Udychak, Seva's agent, to All Things Mavs on X.

"We believe this is the best step for Seva’s long-term development," Udychak said. "He’ll have another season in a great environment with meaningful minutes, a lot of responsibility, and the opportunity to keep improving every part of his game."

Udychak also added that Ishchenko "remains very motivated to earn his opportunity in the NBA."

Ishchenko had an uphill battle to play next season

Seva remaining with Lokomotiv Kuban was the best move for his future, and when looking at Dallas' current depth chart, this is even more obvious. The Mavericks have a surplus of wings, and Ishchenko's chances of receiving real rotation minutes were slim. He would've been battling with Cooper Flagg, P.J. Washington, Zaccharie Risacher, Caleb Martin, Tarik Biberovic, and Max Christie for minutes, and all of these players would likely get the nod before him.

The Mavericks made the right decision by not aggressively pushing for a buyout, and he'll have a much better chance to expand his game in Russia rather than being stuck on the end of the bench in Dallas. The organization will obviously keep tabs on him next season as he plays for Lokomotiv Kuban, and a solid season could earn him a roster spot in Dallas for 2027-28.
