Vsevolod Ishchenko update is bittersweet for Mavericks fans

It's official. Dallas Mavericks' 56th overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, Vsevolod "Seva" Ishchenko, will remain with Lokomotiv Kuban in Russia for the 2026-27 season, a bittersweet development that gives the young guard another year to develop while also delaying his arrival in Dallas.

While this was the expected outcome, that doesn't make it any less disappointing for Mavericks fans. Despite arriving as an unheralded late second-round pick, Ishchenko impressed during Summer League, averaging 9.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. His numbers won't jump off the page, but his feel for the game, defensive instincts, and all-around impact suggested he could become a legitimate NBA contributor sooner rather than later.

The 6-foot-8 swingman just looks the part, and those around the league took notice, even saying Seva "might end up being a really good player..." That's quite the admission for a player who hardly ranked among the top 100 prospects in most draft analysts' rankings.

Why the Dallas Mavericks couldn't bring Seva back this season

And with Seva making a name for himself, Mavericks fans clamored for the swingman to take over one of Dallas' two-way spots. However, as enticing as that idea was, it was always going to be nearly impossible.

First of all, the Mavericks didn't have any open two-way spots after signing former 11th overall pick Jett Howard to a two-way deal, joining Seva's draftmate Tobi Lawal and sharpshooter John Poulakidas. Even if they had, NBA rules prohibited Dallas from buying out Ishchenko's contract simply to sign him to a two-way deal.

Seva's delayed NBA arrival will benefit everyone

Thus, it was always likely that Seva would remain with Lokomotiv Kuban anyway. But while it may be hard for fans to accept a recent draft pick spending what would've been his rookie season overseas, Seva's agent offered some reassurance with her latest comments.

Seva's agent, Nafiset Udychak, reiterated that he loved his experience suiting up for the Mavericks' Summer League squad and remains motivated to one day play in the NBA. Moreover, this decision should be viewed as a developmental one. Another year of seasoning is arguably the best-case scenario for the 21-year-old wing.

Again, it might not be what Mavericks fans wanted to hear. Even Seva suiting up for the Texas Legends would've felt like a better outcome, but this is what's best for his development. Rather than fighting for minutes, he'll continue playing a featured role for Lokomotiv Kuban, giving him the chance to sharpen his game while building the confidence that comes with consistent opportunities.
