Dallas Mavericks fans are looking at the draft lottery standings more than the real standings at this point of the year, and an injury to North Carolina star forward Caleb Wilson could quietly help Dallas form the wing duo of its dreams in the 2026 NBA Draft.
Wilson has had an incredible season at UNC, averaging 19.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game while shooting 57.8 percent from the field in 24 games, but another hand injury just ended his season. He broke his right thumb during practice last week while dunking.
Caleb Wilson's injury is a blessing in disguise for Dallas
This was a major blow for North Carolina, as he was looking to return after suffering a broken bone in his left hand less than a month ago. Wilson has now broken a bone in both hands within the last month, but this may not be a bad thing for the Mavericks as they look to build a contender around Cooper Flagg.
Dallas' No. 1 priority this summer needs to be finding a co-star for Flagg, and they have the perfect opportunity to do this through the NBA Draft. The Mavericks are poised to have a lottery pick for the second year in a row, and they're going to need the basketball gods to bless them if they want a shot at Caleb Wilson. Despite this, it may not be as hard as it once was.
With Wilson suffering back-to-back injuries, this could cause his draft stock to drop. He has been a consensus top four pick for months now, but these hand injuries could cause him to drop out of the top four ahead of this summer's draft.
Mavericks' path to Caleb Wilson
On top of this, the players just below Caleb Wilson in most mock drafts are surging right now. Kington Flemings, Darius Acuff Jr., and Keaton Wagler could all make a case that they deserve to be a top four pick, and the team that lands in this position could need guard help more than they need another wing.
This would be the best possible news for the Mavericks.
Dallas currently has the seventh-worst record in the NBA at 21-43, but they are just 2.0 games behind the Utah Jazz for the fifth-best odds of landing the No. 1 pick. Every game matters at this point of the season in the tanking standings, and the Mavs could find themselves as one of the bottom five teams in the league depending on how the rest of the season goes.
The final 18 games will have serious implications for the Mavericks' future, and fans would be thrilled if the team could somehow get its hands on Wilson. He'd be the No. 1 or 2 overall pick in most years' drafts due to how dominant he's been at North Carolina, and Dallas would have one of the scariest young one-two punches in the league with Wilson and Flagg.
Why Cooper Flagg and Caleb Wilson would be unstoppable together
While Dallas obviously needs guard depth more than it needs wing depth, Wilson is worth making a compromise for. He's a freak athlete with insane measurables (6-foot-10 with a wingspan bigger than 7-foot), and the Mavericks would immediately have their two building blocks to kick off the new era around.
Having two star wings as two of Dallas' best players would give them a completely different look from what we've seen in years past, but it could be exactly what they need to become contenders again. Wilson's ability to play above the rim, rebound at an elite rate, and hit tough mid-range shots would give the Mavericks a dangerous frontcourt, but just like Flagg, he makes his money on the defensive end.
Wilson is known for his relentless competitiveness, and this is something that talent evaluators were raving about before Flagg entered the league as well. He loves playing hard-nosed defense, and he is a monster help-side defender.
Wilson and Flagg, paired with Dereck Lively II, would have opposing players thinking twice before trying to finish at the rim on them. Each player is an elite help-side rim protector, and Wilson's leaping ability allows him to rise up with anyone.
Mavericks are searching for players exactly like Caleb Wilson
The Mavericks are looking for players who bring the same things as Cooper Flagg, and this could lead them straight to Caleb Wilson.
Dallas values defense heavily, and bringing in one of the best two-way players in the draft would help them double down on the identity that they'd like to have.
"We want guys that embody what the gentlemen you just mentioned embodies, which is the toughness, the high-IQ players, unselfish, hard-nosed defenders, care about the team more than they care about themselves," Mavericks co-interim general manager Matt Riccardi said when asked about the type of player that Dallas would like to add around Flagg.
Wilson to Dallas makes too much sense to ignore, and his injury could be exactly what the Mavs need to have a better shot at drafting him.
