The Dallas Mavericks have one of the most important decisions in franchise history staring them in the face as the 2025-26 season comes to a close later this month. They need to find a new full-time general manager to replace Nico Harrison after he was fired earlier this season, and they already have their sights set on one of the most accomplished executives of this generation, Bob Myers.
Mavericks want Myers
NBA insider Marc Stein detailed Dallas' interest in Myers on Wednesday in an edition of his Substack (subscription required), and Mavericks fans should be fired up about the potential of Myers coming to Dallas. He has all of the accolades that an executive could want, and his expertise would be an excellent addition for the Mavs.
"League sources tell The Stein Line that the most frequently whispered Dallas target from that category is actually former Golden State Warriors lead executive Bob Myers, who would naturally have Welts' strong backing after their successful years together with the Warriors," Stein reported.
He reported that the Mavericks also hold interest in Sam Presti, Brad Stevens, and R.C. Buford, but each of these candidates would be nearly impossible to pry away from their current teams (Oklahoma City, Boston, and San Antonio, respectively). Each of them runs some of the most well-built teams in the NBA, and it would be a shock for them to abandon the strong bond they've built with their current organizations.
With these top executives off the table, this is where Myers comes into play.
Dallas may have the secret weapon to lure him back to the NBA
Current Mavericks CEO Rick Welts worked with Myers in Golden State for the Warriors for 10 years, and together, they built one of the most successful NBA dynasties of this generation. The Warriors won three titles and made the NBA Finals five times during their time together, and Welts wants to bring this same type of success to the Mavericks.
One year after Welts left Golden State, Myers helped lead them to another NBA Finals win. Four NBA Championships in eight seasons is an incredible achievement, and Myers deserves credit for the roster they built.
He and Welts obviously have great familiarity with one another after working together for a decade in the Bay, but just like Presti and Stevens, bringing him to Dallas isn't going to be easy. Myers is currently the president of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment. Not to mention, he's already turned down attempts from the Atlanta Hawks, Phoenix Suns, and other NBA teams to join their front office over the last few years.
Getting Myers to become the Mavericks' next GM is a lofty task for Welts and Patrick Dumont, but if they can pull this off, Dallas would be in great hands for years to come.
Myers would kick off the Cooper Flagg era with a bang
Dumont and Welts are looking to hire someone who will hold this job for a long time, and they're in no rush to make this decision. While their goal is to hire someone before the NBA Draft, they know how important this decision is. The Mavericks can't afford to have another Nico Harrison-type meltdown in their front office, and bringing in someone like Myers would be a perfect change of pace.
He's already won at the highest level and understands what it takes to build a championship organization from the ground up. Myers' team-first approach and elite roster building helped the Warriors become one of the scariest teams of all time, and he'd have the chance to build a contender in Dallas around Cooper Flagg if they bring him in.
He fits exactly what the Mavericks need as they search for a new head of basketball operations, and he has the potential to change everything.
