On Tuesday morning, the Dallas Mavericks fired Nico Harrison, the man who was responsible for trading Luka Doncic, and one of the first matters of business that the team must handle is making things right with Dirk Nowitzki as soon as they can. Things haven't been the same between Nowitzki and the Mavericks for years, and they have to rebuild the bridge that has since been burned.
Nowitzki is one of the kindest human beings on the planet, and for him not to be around the Mavericks as much anymore signals how bad things have gotten. He said that he felt bad for Mavericks fans over the weekend after their loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, and Mavs fans miss him more than ever.
You'll never meet someone in Dallas who doesn't love Dirk Nowitzki, Mavericks fan or not, and the team has to do whatever is necessary to repair this fractured relationship.
It's time for Mavericks to repair their relationship with Dirk Nowitzki
From trading Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers to firing Casey Smith while he was out of town with his ill mother, Harrison has made some moves that Nowitzki clearly wasn't cool with, and they alienated him from the franchise by making decisions that he would never make himself. He's the greatest Maverick of all time, spending 21 seasons with the team and leading them to their only NBA Finals win in 2011, and it's time to bring him back home.
Nowitzki went from being a common sight at the American Airlines Center to hardly ever being around, and they have to fix this. Even during the roughest of times toward the end of Nowitzki's career, Mavericks fans rallied around him and showed him endless love, and they need to make him a key piece of their path to rebuilding the franchise back to greatness.
Even though he is now working for Amazon Prime and likely won't be able to make many games in person, a good start for Patrick Dumont and company would be to issue an apology to Nowitzki and find a way to get him involved again next season. Potentially in a role in basketball operations.
Back in 2021, Nowitzki accepted a role with the Mavericks as a special adviser to help the front office in their search for a new head coach and general manager, along with other decisions, but his involvement quietly shrank until his office became dormant. Seeing Nowitzki distance himself more and more from the franchise over the years broke fans' hearts, and now is the perfect time to make him feel valued again.
Dirk Nowitzki wants what's best for the Mavericks, and giving him a role as an adviser once again or something similar seems like a move that must happen down the road. It seems like they began to take steps in the right direction when he delivered a message to the team to play on the big screen following their decision to draft Cooper Flagg over the summer, and making him one of the faces of the franchise again is the least that Dumont can do.
