Ever since the Dallas Mavericks traded Anthony Davis to the Washington Wizards, the team's roster has been under constant question. Whether it's about the rotation for the remainder of the regular season or who will be on the team next year, the Mavericks have had plenty of uncertainty. Despite this, one major question may already have an answer with Khris Middleton and his impending unrestricted free agency.

Middleton has been a surprising bright spot for the Mavericks after acquiring him in a swap for Davis despite his recent struggles; however, his status with the Mavs has been under constant question since the second he landed in Dallas. Many fans expected Middleton to ask for a buyout moments after being traded to Dallas, and now, after sticking the remainder of the season out in a Mavs uniform, fans continue to question his future with the team, but they may have found their answer.

Khris Middleton hints at a long-term future in Dallas

In a recent interview during the Mavericks Ball event, Khris Middleton answered multiple questions about his fit and future with the Mavericks, even saying that he could see himself remaining in Dallas long-term.

"I love the city of Dallas," Middleton said. "As far as the organization, it's been great. I stayed here for a reason, I like where things are headed here... I like the way they're trying to do things here, so we'll see what happens."

Middleton would later add that he had a chance to chase a ring with multiple contending teams, but ultimately decided to stay with the Mavericks because he felt it was best to finish the season out in Dallas. Turning down offers to potentially win a championship with another team should be a huge indicator to Dallas fans that Middleton isn't against remaining in Dallas this offseason.

Since joining the Mavericks, Middleton has averaged 11.9 points per game on 39 percent shooting from behind the arc. While the 34-year-old has struggled as of late, he is being asked to be one of Dallas' main scoring options despite his age catching up to him over the past few years.

Mavericks can't afford to let Middleton walk in free agency

Despite his age and past injuries being a possible concern for the Mavericks, Dallas needs to do everything possible to retain the former champion. Middleton has a lot more to offer than his on-court skills, with his experience and championship knowledge being something special to pair alongside Cooper Flagg.

Not to mention, the Mavericks could probably retain Middleton for a relatively low price, considering he is on the waning end of his NBA career. The Mavericks need to make it clear that they want to win championships as soon as possible this offseason, and signing Middleton would send that exact message to the fanbase.

While losing might be the most important thing the Mavericks can do in the moment to position themselves better to draft a co-star for Flagg, Dallas also needs to keep tabs on who might re-sign and who they might let walk over the offseason. Middleton must be a name the Mavericks retain for locker room purposes and his veteran voice.
