With a few days to spare, the Dallas Mavericks have exercised their fourth-year team option on Zaccharie Risacher's contract for the 2027-28 season. Ensuring Risacher can't hit free agency after this season by exercising their team option was a no-brainer decision for Dallas, even though he is set to make $17.4 million next season, and this move shows that the Mavericks believe in him and his future just five games into his third season.
If Dallas had doubts about Risacher, they could've easily gotten rid of him and his money off their books by declining the team option and allowing him to hit free agency after his third season. Instead, they opted to keep him around after seeing him play just four games (the Mavericks picked up their team option before Wednesday night's win over the Oklahoma City Thunder).
The Mavericks targeted Zaccharie Risacher
Dallas' faith in Risacher has been clear since the moment they traded for him. The Mavericks were the ones who initiated the trade for Risacher rather than being a third team to help get Lu Dort from the Oklahoma City Thunder to the Atlanta Hawks. This speaks volumes about what they think of him.
They were able to acquire the No. 1 overall pick from the 2024 NBA Draft for just Ryan Nembhard and a second-round pick, and this decision has already paid off. He's averaging 9.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.8 steals, and 1.8 blocks per game, and defense has become his calling card.
Risacher is already making his mark in Dallas
His hustle, rebounding, and help-side defense have been the best parts of his game since he arrived in Dallas, and his defensive impact alone has been enough of a reason for the Mavs to keep him beyond this season. Exercising the team option for his fourth season was an easy decision, as he still has plenty of potential, and their belief in him couldn't be clearer.
Last night, the young forward finished with a season-high 13 points to go along with six rebounds, one steal, and one block. He knocked down multiple 3-pointers for the first time this season, created second-chance opportunities for himself with his effort on the offensive glass, and played outstanding defense on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Risacher forced the two-time MVP into an airball and blocked his shot in this game, and the Mavs have plenty to be excited about when it comes to his future.
"I thought tonight he painted a masterpiece," Mavericks head coach Dusty May said when asked about Risacher's performance after Wednesday's game. "He’s impacting every single possession. The job he did on Shai in the second half, I’ve watched a lot of Shai film, and you don’t see that very often."
Risacher has earned his spot in the Mavs' future
May has liked what he's gotten out of the third-year forward, and their decision to opt into the team option shows that they value him as a piece of the young core alongside Flagg. One of the most important things for Risacher to prove in Dallas was that he would emerge as a featured piece of the team's new-look core, and after a handful of games, he has done that and more.
Risacher's team-first mindset complements Flagg's game perfectly, as he does all the little things, defends at a high level, and projects to be a strong shooter. Coop needs these players around him, and Zacch should look like an even better fit alongside Flagg as he gets more comfortable offensively.
Risacher's impact has stretched beyond what the box score can illustrate, and he's happy to be on a team that appreciates him.
"I was super happy," Risacher said when asked about his reaction to the news that Dallas picked up the fourth-year option. "I’m feeling grateful to be in this organization…Everybody wants to win…I’m grateful to be able to be in that environment for like two years, at least (with a smile)."
