Mavericks face difficult Zaccharie Risacher decision with little time to decide

The Dallas Mavericks acquired Zaccharie Risacher exactly one week ago from the Atlanta Hawks, and they already have a difficult decision to ponder before he even plays a game. Should Dallas opt into the fourth-year option on his rookie contract, or allow him to become a free agent after his first year with the team?

Why this Zaccharie Risacher decision won't be easy

Risacher is under contract for next season for about $13.8 million, but that number jumps up to $17.4 million for the 2027-28 season. The Mavericks have until just October 31, 2026, to decide on the team option on Risacher's contract for his fourth season in the association. While this is normal for players on rookie-scale contracts, Dallas is in an abnormal position comparatively.

Most teams have two full seasons to evaluate whether the player on a rookie deal looks like a long-term fit on their team. Instead, the Mavs have about three months and just one week of NBA basketball to evaluate how he meshes in their system.

The most challenging part about this decision is that Risacher hasn't played a game for Dallas yet. They'll only have a few games to gauge how he fits next to Cooper Flagg and company before the deadline for the team to exercise or decline their team option arrives, but this isn't enough time to make a pivotal decision about the No. 1 overall pick from the 2024 NBA Draft's future on the team.

Time would help make this choice easier

It's hard to get a real read on a player after just a few games, and this will be especially true for someone new to the Mavericks. It takes time for players to get comfortable with their new team, and for someone who is poised to come off the bench, he will need to prove his worth fast.

The Mavericks would likely love to have more time to make this decision, but that's not a luxury they're going to get. Dallas will have to decide about Risacher's future almost immediately after the 2026-27 season begins, and both sides of this decision could have massive implications for their future.

Both options come with dangerous risks

If Dallas opts out and Risacher proceeds to have a breakout season, the Mavericks will look like fools. They would've had the chance to control the future of a potential marquee piece of their young core, having him for the 2027-28 season before making a decision about his future, rather than having him hit free agency after just one year with the team.

On the other hand, the Mavericks could opt in, and Risacher could have another mediocre season. Paying $17.4 million for a player who may never even grow into an everyday starter is a risky proposition, and Dallas may be better off opting out ahead of next season if they don't have confidence that he can grow into a high-level role player.

Both sides of the coin come with risks for the Mavericks, and having to make an eight-figure decision about the future of a former No. 1 pick this quickly is one of Dallas' biggest challenges remaining this offseason.
