Two years ago, the Dallas Mavericks were the best NBA team in Texas. The team had just reached the NBA Finals. Not to mention, they also had one of the top duos in the league with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. It seemed like the future was bright, as the Mavs were destined to run the state for years to come. That was until Nico Harrison did the unthinkable.
The former general manager reshaped basketball in the state by trading Luka Dončić. The trade altered Dallas' power status, as a team that was once on the rise quickly sank into rebuild mode.
The Mavs must now do everything in their power to catch back up to the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. Both Texas teams are clearly lightyears ahead of Dallas, as they have the youth and roster to contend in the Western Conference. Dallas, on the other hand, must hit the reset button, something fans never imagined.
The Mavericks must rewrite their future
The 2023-24 season was a magical run for the Dallas Mavericks. The team had a generational talent in Luka Doncic, who was an MVP finalist. Dallas also added Kyrie Irving the season prior, an NBA Champion who just needed a fresh start.
Other key additions included drafting Dereck Lively II, a promising rookie who exceeded expectations, and trading for P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford. The two players helped bring new energy to Dallas, as they were key contributors to the NBA Finals run.
One difference, though, was the team's chemistry. It was an all-time high, as players connected well both on and off the court. Irving and Doncic were the leaders behind the established connections. Their relationships blossomed into something special, as they went from teammates to "hermanos" in a flash.
The Mavericks seemed far ahead of teams like the Spurs and Rockets, as they were both struggling to find their identity. The other Texas teams were in rebuild mode and didn't make the playoffs during the Mavs' Finals run.
How the mighty Mavericks have fallen
However, Dallas' dominant squad soon came crashing down when Harrison traded Doncic last year. It was a trade that altered the course of the three teams mentioned above. Dallas failed to mesh with Irving and Anthony Davis leading the way, as injuries and failed expectations soon came crashing down. The Mavs were forced to tank and trade Davis, as they shifted their attention to building around rookie Cooper Flagg.
The other Texas teams took major strides, while Dallas' ship began to sink. The Spurs quickly rebuilt their roster, as Victor Wembanyama turned San Antonio into contenders, while the Rockets added MVP Kevin Durant to a squad already equipped with youth and experience.
Both teams are destined to run the table in the future. Currently, they own two of the top four seeds in the West, and they're true title contenders. It's a harsh reality Mavs' fans must now endure. Not too long ago, Dallas was a team destined to run the Western Conference and the state of Texas.
It's a sad turn of events for a franchise once destined for glory. Now, Dallas can only hope Cooper Flagg exceeds Luka Doncic's brilliance, as the team tries to reach San Antonio and Houston's status. Hopefully, the return of Kyrie Irving and a top draft pick will be enough to help Dallas become contenders once again.
