Dallas Mavericks fans will never forget where they were on February 1, 2025 — the night Luka Doncic got traded to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis. Little did anyone know that not only was former general manager Nico Harrison in on the trade, but head coach Jason Kidd may have been behind it, too.
Mavs minority owner Mark Cuban was called out for selling the team following the trade. If he didn't, Doncic would still be in Dallas. Cuban opened up about selling the team, saying he doesn't regret selling the team, but rather who he sold it to. On the "Intersections" podcast on the Dallas Morning News, Cuban also revealed that Michael Finley wasn't involved in the move, but Kidd was.
Kidd since has denied this claim, but Mavericks still have a reason to have their doubts.
Why Mavericks fans don't trust Jason Kidd anymore
There's a lot to go around when pinning the blame on the Doncic trade. Of course, Harrison is always the first name that comes up, as he was the one who quietly negotiated with Lakers GM Rob Pelinka. Keeping Kidd as head coach moving forward isn't doing any favors for Mavs fans if Cuban was telling the truth. The Doncic trade remains an ugly stain on the worst night in Dallas sports history, and anyone who was involved should no longer be part of the organization.
The fans' voices matter, and if some folks disagree with Kidd remaining the head coach, take a look at what happened with Harrison. The never-ending chants of "Fire Nico" were too much for the Mavs to overcome, and the Mavs had no choice but to fire Harrison.
If Mavs fans have the power to get a GM fired, do they have the same power to influence the same people up top to fire the head coach? The Doncic trade is never going to be forgotten, and why would it? It's known as the worst trade in NBA history.
The Lakers are thriving with Doncic, as the Mavs' Western Conference foe remains one of the hottest teams in the NBA going into the playoffs. This is all because of the player that the Mavs gave up, and fans will never forget him.
Today's NBA shows Jason Kidd's job isn't safe
In this day and age, championship-winning coaches are getting fired left and right. Mike Budenholzer, Nick Nurse, Frank Vogel, and Mike Malone all won championships recently, and they have all gotten the boot.
Kidd has led the Mavs to the Western Conference Finals and the NBA Finals. Not a bad resume, but he's fallen short of the ultimate prize. Cuban saying that Kidd was in on the Doncic trade could cause the fanbase to blow up if they believe him rather than Kidd.
If the Mavs hit a home run in their GM search, it may be the perfect excuse to clean house and part ways with Kidd. The Mavs are still far away from that, but they need to proceed with caution, thanks to 19-year-old Cooper Flagg, who is ready to lead their future.
While the Mavs can no longer fix the Doncic mistake, they should ensure the same doesn't happen with Flagg. With Kidd at the helm, fans may not have the same trust they did before.
