Mavericks are already racing toward a future free agency problem

Brandon Williams has been an excellent addition to the Dallas Mavericks since they signed him during the 2023-24 season. His production has skyrocketed this year, as Williams has proven to be a valuable member of the team and has started in 12 games. Yet, his time with the Mavericks may be cut short. Dallas may not be able to afford Williams when he hits free agency in the summer.

Last season, Williams signed a two-year, $2.3 million deal back in April after he outplayed his two-way deal. The Mavs quickly gave Williams a standard contract, as he used all of his two-way eligibility. Dallas had to ensure they didn't lose him before the end of the season, so the team reeled him in just before the start of the Play-In Tournament.

His new contract was the right move at the time, as the Mavs needed all the help they could get with all of the injuries. Dallas desperately needed a point guard with Kyrie Irving out, and Williams filled the void. However, it's unclear whether Williams will get another contract from the team, as his value is only increasing as the season goes on.

Brandon Williams' Mavericks future is far from certain

Williams is having the best season of his career, and the rest of the league is noticing. He has elevated his game to the next level, as his numbers have drastically increased. The savvy guard is averaging 12.7 points per game, a 4.4 increase from last season, and 3.7 assists, another increased statistic. So, Williams' game has reached new heights, as his minutes per game have been elevated.

Last month, Williams had one of the best performances. He averaged 15.3 points per game and had multiple games where he scored 20 or more points. Dallas' sixth man has definitely elevated his production this season. His production has fans raving, as they believe he could be a pivotal part of the team's future with Cooper Flagg, as he is only 26 years old.

Despite Williams' breakout season, the idea of Williams and Flagg playing together in the future might be too good to come true. The reality is, Williams might be too expensive for Dallas, as his recent surge in production will come with a price.

In simple terms, the Mavericks could end up losing a valuable point guard in free agency who is playing the best basketball of his young career. It's a situation fans have seen many times before, as players like Steve Nash and Jalen Brunson all experienced a similar outcome. Fans can only hope that this time it doesn't backfire.

Williams has shown he deserves another contract from the Dallas Mavericks. He has been a valuable asset to a struggling team. Not to mention, his role has drastically increased over rookie Ryan Nembhard.
