The Dallas Mavericks find themsleves in an awesome position to secure a spot in the Play-In Tournament later this week, even with all of the injruy and trade chaos they've gone through this season, and the outlook for their potential in the postseason is looking stronger than initially expected since Anthony Davis, Dereck Lively II, and Daniel Gafford all returned to the lineup.
Dallas' frontcourt has quickly become extremely dangerous again, as Jason Kidd has the ability to start three lockdown defenders, P.J. Washington, Davis, and Lively II next to each other, but their backcourt doesn't have the same luxury.
Ever since Kyrie Irving tore his ACL in March, Dallas' guard room has been in turmoil. They've had to heavily rely on Spencer Dinwiddie since he is one of the only available point guards on the roster right now, but the Mavericks are about to get a major boost in this department right before the playoffs begin.
Mavericks sign young score-first guard to two-year deal
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the Mavericks plan to convert Brandon Williams's two-way contract to a standard two-year deal when they're able to later this week, allowing him to be available for the playoffs. This was a move that Mavs fans expected for weeks, as Williams was excellent in his elevated role last month, and fans can't wait to see him on the hardwood again.
Williams's dominant scoring off the dribble and energy have been missed in Dallas ever since he became ineligible to play anymore games last month (two-way players are only allowed to be available for 50 games), and now the Mavericks just added a major punch to their bench unit for the playoffs and beyond.
Williams is only 25 years old, and the Mavericks having him for the next two years will make this offseason a bit easier, allowing them to focus on re-signing Irving while giving him a strong backup option until he returns. Dallas struck gold in the middle of the season last year when they signed Williams to a two-way deal, and while he hasn't gotten a big chance to contribute until recently, he has proven to Kidd that he desereves a real role in the rotation.
Williams can get to the rim whenever he wants due to his quickness and smooth handle, and his pull-up game is also deadly. He is piecing his game together at the perfect time, as he has been able to adapt to any role that Kidd has assigned to him, and he should end up playing big minutes immediately leading into the playoffs.
Assuming Dallas signs Williams on April 10, this will give him the chance to play in the final two regular season games of the season against the Toronto Raptors and Memphis Grizzlies before the Play-In Tournament begins. As things stand now, it looks like Dallas will travel to play the Sacramento Kings on the road for the first round of the play-in, which will be a major challenge for the Mavericks.
