Masai Ujiri gives Mavericks a needed breath of fresh air after Nico Harrison era

Two seasons ago, the Dallas Mavericks fanbase endured an unforgettable storm as Nico Harrison, the former general manager, pulled off one of the worst trades in NBA history by sending Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. Simply put, fans will never forget the Luka trade, or the second half of the 2024-25 NBA season. The infamous trade was the icing on the cake of a horrific season, as Dallas lost Kyrie Irving later that season to an ACL tear that caused him to miss the entire next season.

Yet, Mavericks President Masai Ujiri is ready to help fans move past the spill Harrison left on his way out the door. His recent interview at the team's Media Day on Friday is something that Dallas is getting a much-needed breath of fresh air after a few years of chaos.

Mavericks' new management is the fresh start Dallas needed

"New season here. I know there's been a lot of changes in the organization: changes are sometimes hard, but I think a lot of times we hope that changes are for the good," Ujiri said. "We feel a new energy: we feel the brightness not only with the team, with the people around."

Obviously, the president's statement above is why Dallas gave him the keys to run the organization. He was the perfect candidate to bring a new wave of energy.

Ujiri's new wave of emotions was felt right away; he set the tone early for Dallas. The president's first item on the agenda was hiring Mike Schmitz. The move had a domino effect, with the team getting rid of someone involved with the Doncic trade by parting ways with coach Jason Kidd.

Yet, the biggest move was Dallas hiring Dusty May as the team's new head coach. Compared to Kidd, May brings a new style. He connects well with players and provides a new, fast-paced offense that is centered around positional versatility.

Ujiri's approach should excite fans for the season

Obviously, there is plenty to be excited about with Ujiri leading the Mavericks. His recent message at Media Day should have fans raving about the upcoming season.

"We are trying to bring joy back to basketball, in this city, with this team," Ujiri said.

Ujiri believes that with a new coaching staff, an upgraded roster, and Cooper Flagg leading the way, fans should have plenty to look forward to. Two seasons later, the team should be ready for a fresh start after the Nico Harrison disaster.

Winning basketball is back in Dallas

As mentioned, Dallas fans will never get over the Luka Doncic trade. The team made the NBA Finals the season prior to trading him. So, it didn't make any sense to trade the cornerstone of the franchise. Nico Harrison, though, didn't care. Harrison was fired last season, and Anthony Davis, the player they traded Doncic for, was dealt to the Washington Wizards.

It's clear that last season was a disaster, and fans were ready to start this year with a clean slate. Ujiri believes the team can flip the script. The motto is simple: a breath of fresh air should lead to winning basketball in the future.

Ujiri had this to say when closing out his opening remarks at Media Day:

"Basketball is all about winning, and we want to win in Dallas; and we will win in Dallas."
