Last season, when the Dallas Mavericks traded Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis and Quentin Grimes for Caleb Martin, it was clear that their 3-point shooting would decline. Dallas was one of the worst 3-point shooting teams in the NBA down the final stretch of the season, and with their dedication to running double-big lineups, they are going to need their role players to step up as shooters this next season, especially Klay Thompson.
On Friday morning, Thompson reminded the Mavs why they can't afford to trade him by any means, as he drilled 72 3-pointers in a row in a workout at the infamous Summit gym in New York City with NBA skills coach Chris Brickley.
Brickley is known for hosting workouts with high-level NBA players in this gym, and Thompson just showed exactly how he is one of the best shooters in NBA history.

Drilling over 70 threes consecutively from the corner is a task that only one of the best shooters to ever touch a basketball could pull off, and it looks like Thompson is coming with a vengeance next season. He has been in the spotlight over the past week or so after his relationship with Megan Thee Stallion went public, and he is in a great spot to show the world that he is still one of the best shooters in the NBA.

Last season for Dallas, Thompson averaged 14.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 0.7 steals per game while shooting 41.2 percent from the field and 39.1 percent from downtown. Thompson's 39.1-percent shooting from three was his second-best mark over the last four years (since he returned from a two-year absence due to injuries), and he was willing to play any role that Dallas gave him.
One of the main reasons Thompson signed with Dallas last summer was to play alongside Doncic and compete for his fifth championship, and while he is no longer playing next to one of the best shot creators to ever touch a basketball, he is still making his impact felt.
He has never complained despite having some major changes in Dallas over the past few months, and this adaptability, combined with his team-first mentality and electric shooting, make him someone who the Mavericks are going to rely upon heavily.
With Cooper Flagg now on the squad, the Mavericks' starting five is now going to be massive, as Flagg will likely start alongside D'Angelo Russell, Davis, and Dereck Lively II, with the last starting lineup spot likely being occupied by Thompson or P.J. Washington. With Flagg, Davis, and Lively II holding down the paint, Dallas is going to need more shooting in this group, and that's why they should roll with Thompson as the fifth starter.
As shown during the training session with Brickley in which he drilled over 70 threes in a row, Thompson can never be left open and can get hot quickly, and the Mavs' shooting as a team would plummet if they decided to move him this summer. Some Mavericks fans have speculated that Thompson could be included in a trade if they were to try to acquire another star, and that would be one of the worst decisions they could possibly make.
The Mavericks are going to need Thompson's shooting even more than they needed it last year, and he clearly still has that touch to be a dangerous sharpshooter every single night.
