In a loaded Western Conference, the Dallas Mavericks have been a non-competitive team for most of the regular season, which has led many fans to speculate about which player and draft position the team might land. While it's hard to pinpoint exactly where Dallas will end up in the draft before the NBA's May Draft Lottery date, Jason Kidd may have revealed what type of player he is looking to put in a Mavericks uniform.
In a recent press conference, Kidd was asked what he looks for in a point guard, and while he never mentioned the Mavericks drafting a guard, fans have already spun what Kidd has said and pinpointed who the team may be targeting for June's draft. Being so depleted at the guard position and with this draft class being loaded with ones and twos, the team has a perfect shot to add a future co-star next to Cooper Flagg.
Kidd's point guard quote has fans looking ahead to the draft
The Naismith Hall of Fame point guard has high expectations for who he wants to run his team.
“The No. 1 is can you make others better? Are you unselfish?" Kidd said in question to what he looks for in a point guard. "Can you win? Do you have to score? There’s a lot of things…Can they make others better first? Those are the ones that stand out.”
Kidd would also hammer down on the position that a guard needs to make everyone on the floor better if he wants to stick out. Even still, while Kidd never mentioned one name in the draft or even mentioned this summer's draft, fans can speculate who the Mavericks might target if they are looking for a guard to pair next to Flagg if they continue to lose games.
With Kyrie Irving making his return next season, this also gives the team a cushion to draft other players or select someone who they feel can better impact the team down the road after a few seasons of development. Regardless, the Mavericks need to load up on guards with one of their three picks.
Mavericks' draft position makes a guard the obvious move
With the Mavericks likely landing somewhere between pick six and 10 in the draft, fans can already narrow down the guards that could be available. Names like Keaton Wagler, Darius Acuff Jr., Mikel Brown Jr., and even Labaron Philon Jr. are all options in that draft range. Some names have already piqued fans' interest, and each of the aforementioned names matches Kidd's statement in one way or another.
Wagler, Acuff Jr., and Brown Jr. all fit this description the closest, with Wagler winning over fans most as of late. The fact that he's led Illinois to the Final Four should help his draft stock skyrocket, and his unselfishness and adaptability have turned his once-overlooked freshman season into an unforgettable one.
Kidd, who was a Hall of Fame point guard himself in his playing days, has high standards to meet when it comes to who he will allow to carry the weight of the offense, which almost ensures the Mavericks will draft someone who can step up to the plate. Drafting Flagg's next co-star and potential guard of the future has never been more important for the Mavericks, and now they have their shot at achieving that goal.
