History says Mavericks are due for an abnormal Klay Thompson explosion in early 2025

When the Dallas Mavericks completed a sign-and-trade for Klay Thompson this past July, one of the greatest 3-point shooters and Golden State Warriors of all time, it sent shockwaves around the entire NBA. However, Thompson's Maverick tenure began with inconsistency.

After recording 22 points in his Mavericks debut, Thompson would only have one 20-point game for the rest of October and November. Finding inconsistency with his 3-point shooting and the ability to score. He typically couldn't put together multiple big performances early on, but that has changed recently as he is starting to find his groove.

This season, Thompson is averaging 14.1 points per game. Even with averaging the third most points per game on the roster, the Mavericks need to get more out of Thompson, especially now with Luka Doncic going to be out for some time with a left calf strain. However, the Mavericks might finally get the scoring they were hoping for out of Thompson with how much success he's had while playing in January.

Thompson always takes his game to the next level once January hits

It might sound shocking to some, but Thompson has played lights out when playing in the month of January in his career. This is a push the Mavericks have been missing with getting an offensive boost to begin his Mavericks tenure when 2025 arrives for Thompson. The end of his December was excellent as he strung together multiple big games and was playing with the most confidence we've seen out of him since joining the Mavs, and this is setting the stage for a big start to 2025.

In his final two seasons as a Warrior, Thompson's scoring ability in January was excellent. Last season, Thompson averaged 20 points per game on 40.5 percent shooting from three in January. In the 2022-23 season, Thompson was able to average an impressive 27 points per game on 43.1 percent shooting from three in January.

However, his ability to light it up in January isn't just from the past two seasons. Take a look at the five consecutive years the Warriors made the NBA Finals from 2015-2019.

There's just something about the New Year that gets Thompson going, and Mavs fans could be poised to see more of the same this season once 2025 hits.

Before December 2024 ended, Thompson discussed how he was ready to kick things into a new gear to begin 2025. He said that he is continuing to get more comfortable within Dallas' system, and he is excited about what 2025 will bring. He knows that he has untapped potential that he hasn't unlocked with the Mavs yet, and he seems determined to continue to improve.

The Mavericks are currently 20-13 in the Western Conference after last night's 110-100 loss to the Sacramento Kings. Tomorrow night, the Mavericks begin the New Year playing the Houston Rockets at Toyota Center.

With it being a new year and with Thompson's ability to score in January and take his game to the next level, the Mavericks need an offensive boost from Thompson to help them weather this upcoming tough stretch. History has shown that Thompson has the ability to do this, especially at this time of the year, and the Mavericks need it. Kyrie Irving needs to have another proven scorer with him while leading the team without Doncic, and Thompson has plenty of momentum to carry into 2025.
