The Luka Doncic trade finally felt real for Dallas Mavericks fans on Tuesday night.
Over three weeks after the Mavericks traded Doncic, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a first-round pick, Doncic faced off against his former team for the first time. Doncic had plenty of motivation heading into this one after all of the leaked comments coming out of Dallas following the trade, and he was out for blood at Crypto.com Arena.
NBA fans had their eyes glued to their televisions all evening long, and star players from both sides made this game one of the most exciting ones of the year.
Grading Doncic's highly-anticipated game against Dallas
Despite a strong showing from Doncic's "hermano" Kyrie Irving, as he finished with 35 points, Doncic and the Lakers got the last laugh as they won 107-99. This game was filled with action from the opening tip to the final buzzer, and this could end up being one of the best rivalries in the NBA moving forward.
Doncic had his way in this one, as he finished with 19 points, 15 rebounds, 12 assists, three steals, and two blocks while shooting 6-17 from the field and 1-7 from downtown, and it was clear from the opening tip that this game held some extra weight for him. He started the game aggressively, and fans got to see every part of his game in this one.
He picked apart Dallas' defense with his passing, finished strong around the rim, and knocked down an extremely tough three in the first half. His energy was high in this one, as he hit the Mavericks bench with a staredown and gave an emphatic yell after an and-one bucket in the first quarter.
He also made some strong defensive plays early in this one, and he was on a mission to prove the Mavericks wrong for trading him. Doncic wanted to spend his entire career in Dallas, and he'll use them trading him as motivation in every game that he plays against the Mavs for the rest of his career.
He heard all of the noise about his game over the past few weeks, and he took it all personally. His defense was a strong point in this one, as he finished with 99 steals and 99 blocks, and he was fully engaged all season long. Doncic being fully locked in on defense was typically always a recipe for a great game on that end of the floor, and that's exactly what was illustrated in this game.
Nico Harrison's bet against Doncic was on full display for the world to see on Tuesday night, and while Dallas wasn't fully healthy for this one, he got a great look into how dominant Doncic can be with his playmaking. Games between the Mavs and Lakers are always going to bring the best out of both teams for years to come, and Doncic gave fans of both teams a show in Los Angeles and officially flipped the page in what was a legendary start to his career in Dallas and notched his first triple-double as a Laker.
Doncic controlled the game, regardless of what his shooting numbers looked like, and Mavs fans may never get over this trade.
