Less than a year and a half ago, the Dallas Mavericks made one of the most unexpected trades in NBA history. They sent franchise star Luka Doncic, along with other players, to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis and Max Christie in a three-team deal. The move caught Davis by surprise, as he couldn't believe he was traded to Dallas for Doncic.

Davis, though, may be shocked again, as reports indicated he could be on the move again. Senior NBA Insider Chris Haynes gave a recent update on Davis' time with the Washington Wizards.

"I do think there's a good chance that he may end up somewhere else by the time next season starts," Haynes stated.

Davis may be on his way out of Washington before playing a game

In a recent interview with Craig Melvin, Davis spoke about his low expectations with the Washington Wizards. He mentioned how Washington is a "very bad basketball team," and that it is tough "to go from a bad team to a championship contender." It's a message Wizards fans don't want to hear from their all-star, who was expected to help rejuvenate the franchise.

Remember, Davis is a 10-time all-star who can play at a high level when healthy. Washington gave up a large haul to acquire Davis. They believed pairing him alongside Trae Young and the Wizards' young core could give the franchise a new beginning.

Davis' recent comments don't look good for the franchise. His arrival is supposed to help elevate a team looking to make the playoffs for the first time since 2021. So, the expectation is that he would help break the playoff drought, not downgrade the team's current roster. It's really a bad look, especially considering he didn't suit at all for Washington this past season.

Dallas, on the other hand, can only rejoice that it got rid of Davis and the mess Nico Harrison made. They now have future draft capital from the trade and can effectively build around Cooper Flagg.

The Mavericks traded Davis at the perfect time

As mentioned, Davis has yet to play a game for Washington. He sustained ligament damage in his hand back in January that has kept him sidelined. However, the injury may have been more severe than initially thought.

Davis told ABC News it's a complicated injury that doctors had never seen before. Basically, it reiterates the idea that there is no concrete timetable for him, as Davis was likely not going to return for the season.

This is music to the Mavs' ears. They dodged a bullet by not keeping Davis around. He was a major part of the Doncic deal, and fans were never going to get over the trade. So, trading Davis was the only solution, and it seems to have worked in the Mavs' favor. They got rid of Harrison's mess and traded a player who struggled to stay healthy.

Plus, Khris Middleton and Marvin Bagley III became key parts of Dallas' rotation. The Mavs obviously became the clear winners of the deal. The team can now focus on building around Cooper Flagg, as Davis' recent updates continue to prove the Dallas Mavericks will always be the real winners of the deal.
