Before even playing a game for the Washington Wizards after being traded by the Dallas Mavericks in February, Anthony Davis may have already worn out his welcome in Washington. He didn't play following Dallas' decision to trade him due to a serious hand injury, but his take on his new squad isn't going to age well with Wizards faithful.
"We are a very bad basketball team for sure," Davis said about the Wizards in an interview with Craig Melvin. "On the flip side, it's very tough to go from bad team to a championship contender."
Anthony Davis is already lowering expectations in Washington
Davis kicked off this interview with Melvin by pranking him with a foul-tasting glass of bourbon, and Washington fans will be wishing what he said about his new team was a prank as well. Some things are better left unsaid, and after having Mavericks fans turn on him in Dallas, he's not off to a great start in his new city.
There's no doubt that the Wizards have some work to do before becoming contenders. They just had the worst record in the NBA, and haven't made the NBA Playoffs since 2021.
This is a different situation from what Davis is used to. Still, this is the last thing that fans, or even the organization, would want to hear from their new star player. Washington gave up five draft picks and four players to bring Davis to DC, and him saying this just a few months after the trade went down is a bad look.
He could've taken the optimistic approach and praised the Wizards' young talent or brought up the potential of his on-court pairing with Trae Young. Instead, he set his expectations low for his third team in the last year and a half.
Mavericks fans have to be happy that Dallas moved on when they did, as they were able to acquire draft capital, a fresh start, and most importantly, future financial flexibility to build around Cooper Flagg. These are all things that they couldn't have acquired without trading Davis, and this trade has already turned into a major win for them.
Washington couldn't have expected Davis' start to be this bad
From Davis' hand injury turning into something much more serious than they expected to calling his new team bad, Mavs fans are laughing from the shadows as the Wizards step into the Anthony Davis experience.
There's still a chance that Washington trades him this offseason and moves on before he even plays a game, but if they don't, it's going to be a bit awkward after seeing the way Davis talked about the Wizards with Melvin.
It's okay to have reasonable expectations, but the Wizards traded for Davis and Young to change the culture and get back to winning. Instead of buying into this new culture with some confidence, Davis gave right in to the attitude that has kept the Wizards at the bottom of the NBA.
