The Dallas Mavericks organization might blow up in the way fans have been waiting for since the infamous Luka Doncic trade. Doncic is one of the greatest players in the world, coming off his best season in 2023-24 and now dominating for the Los Angeles Lakers, and GM Nico Harrison has been on thin ice for getting rid of him and every move that has followed.
The chants of "Fire Nico" all of a sudden have some teeth to it, as recent reports indicate that it seems like the end is near for Harrison, and it could happen in the middle of this season. Fans might throw a parade in Dallas whenever this happens, but it's no remedy for the quiet issue at hand. The Mavericks don't have great ball handlers or scorers right now. Anthony Davis continues to be sidelined, and until he comes back, there's no answer for fixing what's on the court now.
Cooper Flagg has shown signs of his age on the court and hasn't been able to stand out too much just yet. The truth is, it's hard to play as an 18-year-old kid in the NBA. Even LeBron James struggled at times as a rookie, and Flagg is just another guy to fall victim to being a small fish in a big pond. The problems are far beyond Harrison, but firing him would be a start.
Mavericks' roster still can't compete at a high level
The Mavs' guards have been disappointing to say the least. D'Angelo Russell is more off than on with his shooting. Without him shooting well, the Mavs will suffer. Klay Thompson has all of a sudden been involved in trade talks after a disastrous start this season. The 15-year veteran is shooting far worse than his potential at less than 30 percent from downtown.
Jaden Hardy isn't enough to make up for the guard woes, and it's a lot to ask for Brandon Williams and Ryan Nembhard to pick up the slack. The best players have been P.J. Washington, Flagg, and Max Christie, and that's not going to cut it because you need shooters to put the ball in the basket.
Dallas' offense is an absolute disaster, and even if they do bring in a new GM, the team won't be able to win games at this point. The roster is flawed, and a new GM would likely be in charge of rebuilding the roster rather than trying to fix Harrison's mess and make this iteration of the roster work.
It should be a win to fire Harrison, right? After all, he made a comment that angered Mavs fans after their season ended. Harrison said he didn't know how important Doncic was to the organization, making it extremely clear that he was not the right guy for the Mavs.
Fans are just waiting at this point for Kyrie Irving to come back, but even if he does, he may not be the same uber-talented point guard that we're used to watching. The Mavs need to dip into trade talks before the season collapses into an embarrassment, but before they do this, they need to fire Harrison and bring in a new general manager with a fresh vision.
The only thing holding Harrison's NBA career together is Patrick Dumont. Harrison isn't likely to get a job after this, and the one event that will forever tarnish his career is the Doncic trade. No NBA front office will want anything to do with Harrison, and while Mavs fans will have a reason to celebrate, they need a lot more to happen to get better on the court.
Dismissing Harrison would be a start to getting the fans back on the Mavs' side, but long story short, the Mavs need to get better now and fast.
