In the blink of an eye, the Dallas Mavericks' future has gone from a major question mark to one of the most promising in the league after Monday night's shocking events, and fans can't wait for the 2025-26 season to begin in October.

On Monday, Dallas won the NBA Draft Lottery and the No. 1 overall pick in this summer's draft despite having only a 1.8 percent chance to pull this off, meaning that they'll have the opportunity to draft Cooper Flagg out of Duke in just over a month to be their new franchise cornerstone for years to come. It has already been reported that the Mavericks don't plan to shop the No. 1 pick and will draft Flagg, reigniting energy back into a city and fan base that desperately needed it.

With Flagg in Dallas, the Mavericks will have the chance to contend right away, as they already have Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving as their star duo. While winning the draft lottery has helped fans get over the Luka Doncic trade from February, the effects of this move may still hover over the Mavericks, as the father of one of the Mavericks' guards believes that the same situation that happened to Doncic will happen to Flagg one day.

Thompson thinks Mavericks will trade Flagg to Lakers one day

Mychal Thompson, the father of Mavericks guard Klay Thompson and current Los Angeles Lakers broadcaster, recently went on X to discuss Flagg's arrival in Dallas, and rather than talking about his potential fit with his new team that his son is a starter for, he joked that Flagg's career with the Mavs would end before it truly begins.

Mychal said that the Mavs would trade Flagg to the Lakers in five years to play with Doncic, and while there was likely some sarcasm in this message, fans' hearts would be broken all over again if this were to happen. The Lakers would likely have one of the best duos in the NBA with Flagg and Doncic, while Mavs fans would be more broken than ever before.

Dallas is a city based on loyalty, as fans have always had the blessing of rooting for a superstar player that the Mavericks drafted and going through everything with them (Doncic and Dirk Nowitzki), and drafting Flagg gives fans the same chance to go through that journey once again.

With Nico Harrison underestimating the fans' reaction to the Doncic trade, he is surely not going to make that same mistake with Flagg. The Doncic trade caused more hurt than Harrison and Patrick Dumont could have ever expected, and they likely understand just how important drafting Flagg and building around him is.

The Mavericks fan base couldn't handle another round of heartbreak of trading their franchise player to the Lakers, and Mychal is likely just coping with the fact that Dallas lucked into Flagg and could surpass Los Angeles in the standings next season.

No matter what happens, the Mavericks should enter the Flagg era with the plan of going through the highs and lows with him while always keeping the main goal of winning the NBA Finals. Flagg has proven that he is a winner at every level, and fans are going to fall in love with his charisma, incredible defense, freak athleticism, and passion right away.

Flagg just isn't any No. 1 pick.

Cooper Flagg is someone who has all-time great written all over him if he continues to develop, and Mychal Thompson's trade fantasy of the Mavs making another wild trade with the Lakers and giving up on him just a few years into his NBA career is something the Mavericks should and likely will avoid at all costs.

The organization understands how blessed they are to be in the position to draft Flagg, and the Flagg era in Dallas is going to be something special.
