Offensively, Zaccharie Risacher's Dallas Mavericks debut on Wednesday night against the Houston Rockets was a disaster. He finished with four points, shooting 2-for-7 from the field and 0-for-4 from downtown, and everything looked rushed. Risacher's threes were way off, he forced a shot off the dribble, and committed some bad turnovers. He just didn't look comfortable in his first action for the Mavs, and some fans began to doubt how ready he truly was for rotation minutes under Dusty May.
Dusty May found the right role for Zaccharie Risacher
This Houston game did not look promising for the young wing outside of his rebounding, energy, and defense, but he put everything together on Friday night in a 121-105 win over the Indiana Pacers. May cracked the code for how he needs to use him moving forward: ensure he's on the court with one or both of Dallas' stars, limit his on-ball creation, and let him wreak havoc on the defensive end.
Risacher needs to be utilized completely as a play finisher rather than a creator, use his length to his advantage, and run hard in transition. This will naturally help open up the rest of the game for him, allowing him to gain confidence that could help him later expand his offensive game and become a more complete player.
Risacher's shooting should improve with better looks
Risacher finished with 11 points, six rebounds, one steal, and three blocks against the Pacers. He knocked down his first 3-pointer of the season after a nice feed by Max Christie in the first quarter, and this shot looked much better than all of his 3-point attempts from opening night. His feet were set and he let it fly with confidence, and more of these good looks should lead to his 3-point percentage rising.
Risacher's shooting was one of the biggest draws that led to him being drafted with the first overall pick by the Atlanta Hawks in 2024, and while he was an average shooter in Atlanta (36.0 percent on 4.2 attempts over two seasons), shooting better shots within the flow of the offense rather than feeling a need to create his own should help him.
Risacher's defense gives the Mavericks another weapon
His energy left a massive mark on this game. He was flying around the court on both ends, finishing well in transition, and making some big defensive plays. These are the types of games that Mavs fans would love to see from him moving forward, as he doesn't need to have big scoring nights to make an impact.
While his shooting veered off in the second half, as he missed a couple of shots at the rim and didn't score after halftime, his defensive production took an uptick. The young forward blocked two shots in the second half, and his off-ball defense was incredible. He is now tied for third in the NBA in total stocks this season (steals and blocks combined), trailing only Walker Kessler and Dyson Daniels.
All three of his blocks came as a help-side defender, as he has great instincts for when to slide over and help his teammates. The Mavs need all of the defensive help they can get, especially if Cooper Flagg misses time after injuring his shoulder, and Risacher could be in for an expanded role while Coop recovers.
Friday's game wasn't perfect for Zacch, but the vision is there. May just needs to unleash him like a bull in a china shop (defensively) every time he steps onto the floor and allow him to affect the game with his speed, energy, and hustle. The rest of his game should follow suit, and he obviously needs to look under control on offense, but Risacher has shown some promise as an energy guy off the bench who makes a positive impact defensively.
