The Dallas Mavericks' first game of the regular season was a massive disappointment on Wednesday night. Dallas lost 128-110 to the Houston Rockets, and the Zaccharie Risacher hype ran into a quick reality check.
The Zaccharie Risacher hype was real this summer in Dallas
The Mavericks traded Ryan Nembhard and a second-round pick for Risacher over the offseason, and many Mavs fans have been extremely high on him since that moment. He was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, and fans were hopeful that a fresh start in Dallas was exactly what the former Atlanta Hawk needed to take a step in the right direction after an underwhelming second season in Atlanta.
MFFLs were hopeful that Risacher could grow in Dallas with some developmental minutes and cement himself as a key piece within the young core. Fans knew that he wasn't going to be a star right away, but the idea of him turning into a high-level starter was certainly common among the fan base.
Risacher's offensive struggles were obvious
Despite the excitement that followed Risacher through most of the summer and training camp, it quickly became evident that he's not as polished as he needs to be to become a key piece in Dusty May's rotation. The Risacher project is going to take some time.
Zacch finished with four points, six rebounds, five steals, and three turnovers while shooting 2-for-7 from the field and 0-for-4 from downtown in 26 minutes. Both of Risacher's makes were open looks at the rim, and his shooting looked concerning.
His hustle on the glass, defense, and energy were all positives, but not being a threat on offense outside of being a cutter or scorer in transition is concerning. Both of his buckets came when the game was out of hand, and the trend of him waiting until the game is out of reach to begin scoring continued from the preseason.
He needs to show more confidence, and if his first game was any indication, him being a strong offensive player for the Mavericks could be a few years away. Risacher's shots and moves looked predetermined.
Risacher looked lost
Despite speculation (and hope from many fans) that Risacher would be the Mavericks' starting shooting guard to begin the season, Max Christie started in his place. Christie wasn't great either, as he finished with just five points while shooting 2-for-8 from the field, but he should be the starter for now. He at least looks comfortable in his role and lets the game come to him. Risacher, on the other hand, looked lost.
His jump shot looked extremely rushed, and if he can't take advantage of open looks from beyond the arc, it's going to be extremely hard for him to play. The Mavericks shot 11-for-38 from three, showing that their shooting struggles from a season ago are still there, and Risacher's shooting was part of the problem. He shot 0-for-4 from beyond the arc, and his shooting struggles from the preseason stuck around.
The Mavericks have a long way to go before becoming a playoff team once again, and Risacher has a long road ahead of him to become a reliable rotation player who can be counted on in the playoffs. His three turnovers in this game were concerning, and until he looks comfortable in his role, he's going to have a hard time making a consistent impact.
Hustle and rebounding are important parts of the game, and neither area looks like it'll be a problem for Zacch, but May is going to need more from him.
