Mavericks narrowly dodge terrifying Anthony Davis injury disaster no one saw coming

Luckily, this Anthony Davis situation is much less severe compared to last time...

After the Dallas Mavericks handled most of their transactional business this offseason already, all eyes in the Mavericks' fandom will be on Cooper Flagg's upcoming Summer League debut and performance later this week. However, Mavericks fans likely blew a quick sigh of relief after seeing a report from NBA insider Shams Charania shortly after noon today, as Charania reported Anthony Davis underwent a procedure to repair a detached retina suffered earlier this season, but is expected to make a full recovery ahead of training camp.

Davis could be seen sporting some sort of wrap or athletic tape right above his right eye in some of Dallas' final games this season, and it wouldn't be surprising whatsoever if this procedure was to correct that same eye, as Charania correctly reported Davis played through multiple hits to the face last season.

Once again, the Mavericks are likely thrilled this isn't anything serious, as the eye is obviously a very sensitive area despite not being a large muscle that impedes bodily movement. Given the verbiage of Charania's reporting, this seems like something Davis was probably playing through during a good chunk of last season, as Davis' warrior mentality is something that has been well documented throughout his short Dallas tenure.

Mavericks will be thankful Davis should be back before training camp

Despite clearly being hobbled by his previous adductor injury or perhaps some other lower body injuries, Davis left it all out on the floor in Dallas' end-of-season loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, scoring 40 points and keeping the Mavericks within striking distance for as long as he could. While Dallas must be wary of Davis or any other players trying to play through injury after their medical team was exposed for a near disaster last season, a retina injury is something players commonly will try to play through, but Mavericks fans will certainly be happy Davis didn't suffer any wild setbacks with this eye injury toward the end of the season and will be able to make a full recovery ahead of training camp after this surgery.

For Davis' personal sake, a procedure on one's retina is something that isn't comfortable whatsoever, and Davis may have to take it easy for a little bit to let his swelling tone down from this surgery, but he should still have plenty of time to ramp his offseason work back up before training camp barring any setbacks.

Of course, that is purely speculative, and Mavericks fans know all too well that it's impossible to try and pinpoint exactly when a player is going to return from injury after Kyrie Irving's recent update, but all signs are pointing toward Davis being okay by the start of next season which is a blessing for the Mavericks and their organization, as they'll need him more than ever to start the season with Irving out.

While Mavericks fans have had mixed feelings about Davis since the Luka Doncic trade and his injury history has been extremely concerning amongst the fanbase, this isn't a significant injury that Davis will have to continually rehab before seeing how his body progresses, and he should be firing back on all cylinders once his retina fully heals before training camp.
