Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic came back to the court earlier this week following some much-needed rest after suffering a heel injury against the Golden State Warriors.
The Mavericks were on full display, moving the ball efficiently and getting guys open against the Portland Trail Blazers. Throughout the last few days, one question was raised regarding Doncic and how much he thinks about personal accomplishments.
To be eligible to win the NBA MVP award, a player needs to meet the 65-game minimum requirement. While there's a strong possibility that Doncic may not meet the minimum threshold because of injuries, that doesn't stop him one bit from looking at the bigger picture.
Luka Doncic is focussed on winning the NBA Finals, not MVP
When asked by a Slovenian reporter about injuries impacting his MVP hopes, Doncic simply responded by saying he doesn't really care about the personal awards, he's just focusing on the bigger picture in the end.
"My main focus point is really a ring, so that doesn't really matter now," Doncic said in Slovenian.
This is the exact mentality that you need from your franchise player. Nikola Jokic has been doing incredible things with the Denver Nuggets and also won a championship. The great ones really don't care about personal accomplishments because the Larry O'Brien trophy feels much sweeter in the end.
Doncic has nine more games he can afford to miss before not being eligible for the prestigious award. For an individual, the MVP award is difficult to win. Take in the numerous factors to win such an award. It takes stamina, conditioning, dominance, consistency, and mental toughness all in one to win.
Don't forget, it's only a regular season award too. Doncic and company need to be on the court together come playoff time when fresh bodies are needed to win games.
Doncic led the NBA in scoring and broke the Mavs' all-time record for points in a season in the 2023-24 season. That alone was a pretty difficult thing to do.
Sometimes great teams need to overcome adversity to get to the end goal. The Mavericks had some head-scratching performances to start the season. Doncic talked about that as well.
"I think our start was not best but in last games we're really proving that we can play with everybody," Doncic said.
There will be injuries, illnesses, and cold runs at some point throughout the year, but it seems like the Mavericks have already undergone those growing pains.
Doncic is very much in the MVP race, but even if he isn't, he doesn't care that much. He's as much bought in as everybody else to help bring a championship to Dallas.
