The Dallas Mavericks' regular season is slowly dwindling away, as the team will play their final home game tonight against the Toronto Raptors. Dallas will then travel to Memphis to battle the Grizzlies on Sunday, and then next week, the postseason begins.
Dallas has already clinched a spot in the Play-In Tournament, and they will likely battle the Sacramento Kings on the road to kick things off. The Mavericks being a play-in team after making the NBA Finals last year shows how poorly this season has gone, and a lot of the blame can be placed on injuries as well as the Luka Doncic trade.
While the Mavericks would be much better off right now if Kyrie Irving hadn't torn his ACL last month, it's undeniable that Nico Harrison made a mistake when trading Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis. Doncic has been thriving in Los Angeles while Davis has had a slow start in Dallas, outside of a few big games, and things couldn't look more grim for the Mavs moving forward.
Mavericks' Kevin Durant trade interest isn't as it once seemed
Both of their star players have injury histories and are already in their thirties, and Harrison must turn this Mavericks team into a more deadly contender this summer to win fans back over. Harrison has made some excellent moves over his course as Mavericks GM (outside of the Doncic trade), and one move that he has been rumored to be eyeing is a trade for Kevin Durant.
There were rumblings that Dallas was heavily interested in trading for Durant at the trade deadline to form a big three alongside Irving and Davis, a few days after the Doncic trade went down, and while the possibilities of this trade are intriguing, it doesn't seem like a major possibility anymore.
In a recent appearance on "The Zach Lowe Show," NBA insider Marc Stein reported that Dallas' interest in a Durant trade has been "overstated," and Zach Lowe agreed from what he has heard. The Mavericks want to roll with their current star duo of Davis and Irving, and it doesn't sound like they have the same high level of interest in a Durant trade and a three-star system as initially reported.
While a trade with the Phoenix Suns for Durant would be risky, considering the assets they'd be forced to give up, it was a move that plenty of Mavericks fans have been wanting ever since the trade deadline rumors emerged. Adding Durant to this roster would inject some more excitement back into the fan base that remains heartbroken about the Doncic trade, and not pursuing Durant aggressively could end up frustrating this group of fans who are lobbying hard for him.
While there are undoubtedly some Mavericks fans who want Durant in Dallas, not all hope is lost when it comes to this rumored Durant update. The Mavericks may be better off by not trading for him to begin with and trotting out a Davis-Irving star duo, and as Mavs fans know as well as anyone, things could quickly change and the Mavs could still pursue Durant once the offseason rolls around.
