With the NBA's regular season nearing the end, the Dallas Mavericks are scrapping to keep their playoff hopes alive. As of Thursday night, the Mavericks are one game out of the ninth seed, which would give them home-court advantage in the first-round of the Play-In Tournament.

Despite Dallas' attempts to keep their playoff hopes alive, this week was much bigger than basketball, with Luka Doncic making his long-awaited return to Dallas in a Lakers uniform. The night started with an emotional Doncic and ended with the Dallas crowd chanting "fire Nico" as Doncic and the Lakers stepped off the floor.

Not only did fans participate in having their voices heard by the front office, but any time Doncic touched the ball, the crowd erupted. Doncic would go on to give Maverick fans what they had been waiting to see for two months and end the historical night with 45 points on uber-efficient numbers.

While Doncic did his thing and reminded Nico Harrison why you don't trade franchise superstars, Jason Kidd's pregame presser left many fans speechless about the possible future of the Mavericks.

Kidd compares Doncic trade to baseball legend Babe Ruth

It's no secret when the Mavericks traded away Doncic for an aging superstar in Anthony Davis, Dallas' timeline got even more cloudy than it already was. The Mavericks didn't only acquire an aging star in Davis but gave fans an even slimmer championship window.

Even still, the Mavericks' championship hopes are slim with their current roster being fully healthy. While Doncic has proven to be a difference-maker in Los Angeles, his performance last night proved why you don't trade generational superstars.

Since trading Doncic, many fans have been quick to say that the Mavericks would regret trading him for generations and how the fallout of trading away a generational talent could lead to an all-time championship drought. While this might be a harsh statement, the Boston Red Sox lived out this nightmare throughout the 1900s after trading away Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees, which would famously be named β€œThe Curse of The Bambino.”

Ruth wouldn't only go on to win four World Series titles with the Yankees but would leave Boston with decades of remorse. While drawing comparisons from Doncic and the bambino may be hard, Jason Kidd would go on to mention how it's cool that trading Doncic has drawn many comparisons to Ruth and the Red Sox.

Kidd's comments may not be what fans want to hear, but if the Mavericks go on to have an all-time championship drought, trading Doncic may be the moment fans look back on.

Doncic has ultimately made the Lakers better, and with the playoffs fast approaching, many Mav fans will cheer on the Slovenian star and the purple and gold. It's unclear if the Mavericks can make the playoffs as an eight seed, but regardless of their Play-In success, beating the Oklahoma City Thunder will be an extremely tough task.

Doncic would no doubt give the Mavericks a much-needed jolt of energy, with Davis battling a nagging injury that could limit the Mavs' playoff hopes. While next season will be a true test of how the Doncic trade will be viewed, this season has ultimately become one of the all-time seasons from hell in franchise history.
