The Dallas Mavericks sent the NBA world into a spiral earlier this month when they traded Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a first-round pick. No one expected Dallas to ever trade Doncic, as he wanted to be a Maverick for life, but Nico Harrison's various concerns about Doncic led him to make this decision.
While Mavericks fans were furious about the Doncic trade when it happened, Davis gave fans a breath of fresh air as he dominated in his debut. It was one of the best halves on both ends of the floor that Mavericks fans have ever seen from a player, and Davis was fired up about it. In less than three quarters, Davis finished with 26 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists, and three blocks while shooting 10-18 from the field and 2-2 from downtown, and he looked unstoppable.
Despite Davis' exciting play early on, it all came crashing down in the third quarter as Davis went back to the locker room, leaving fans inside of the American Airlines Center in a major sense of panic. He had suffered a left adductor strain, and despite telling the media that he was confident that he had avoided a serious injury, that was not the case.
Mavericks finally reveal crucial Anthony Davis injury update
It was later reported that Davis would miss multiple weeks with this injury, and after nearly two weeks of silence, the Mavericks gave an update on Davis' injury.
The Mavericks said that Davis is "making good progress" as he deals with the adductor strain he suffered against the Rockets in his Mavs debut, and he will be re-evaluated in two weeks. This means that at minimum, Davis will miss seven more games, but this is outstanding news for Dallas regardless of him missing a few more weeks.
Update: Jason Kidd announced that the Dallas Mavericks will re-evaluate Anthony Davis on March 6 along with Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford.
Davis' injury was likely going to ruin Dallas' season if he were to have surgery, and by the looks of this update from the Mavs, it sounds like they are going to try to treat this injury without surgery for now. Mavericks fans were initially extremely concerned by this injury considering the Mavs hadn't provided any updates since it happened, but now these same fans can take a huge sigh of relief. The Mavericks now have a chance to make some noise in the Western Conference once Davis returns, and some of the excitement surrounding the team is back in the air.
The fear from fans that Davis would be out for the season has been thrown away from this update, and time will tell if Davis can return to his top form once he returns to the floor. He was healthy and playing at an elite level all season long before the injury, and Mavericks fans could get to witness Davis in a playoff atmosphere in a few months depending on how the team finishes the season.
It looks like they will get healthy at the right time, as Kyrie Irving alluded to earlier this week, and Irving and Davis will have the chance to emerge as one of the Mavericks' best duos if they can lead this team to some big wins down the stretch and into the playoffs. They have big shoes to fill, as Doncic and Irving led the team to the NBA Finals last season, but they are ready for whatever challenge gets thrown their way.
