Controversial Mavericks theory is scarily gaining traction after Davis' injury

Despite losing painfully in the 2024 NBA Finals, the 2023-24 Dallas Mavericks season was one to remember. The Mavericks reached the NBA Finals as a fifth seed with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving leading the way.

Entering this season, the Mavericks had a huge target on their backs with an attempt to run the Western Conference again. Then, the shocking trade of Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers happened and fans are still not over it, even though they will have to be at some point.

Anthony Davis was acquired by the Mavericks in the Lakers from the trade, but now Davis is injured and could miss a significant amount of time. With Davis now being out with an adductor injury, there is one bold prediction on the Mavericks' 2024-25 season that unfortunately might be possible to due Davis being out for some time.

Bold Mavericks prediction may come true with Davis out

Prior to the 2024-25 NBA season, Bleacher Report's Eric Pincus wrote an article titled "1 Hot Take for Every NBA Team This Season." For his bold take on the Mavericks' season, Pincus had the Mavericks "out before WCF." This was an extremely controversial opinion at the time since the Mavericks got so much better during free agency, but fast forward to February 2025, and that prediction is a major possibility of happening for the Mavericks with Davis now injured.

Prior to the start of this season, the Mavericks were destined to reach the Finals again when Klay Thompson joined Doncic and Irving to create a big three. Even with the Mavericks having inconsistency, Doncic returning from the injury he sustained on Christmas would've given the Mavericks a push to climb back in the standings, and they looked like a powerhouse when fully healthy.

Then, Doncic was traded and it broke every Maverick fan's heart. While Davis has been a superstar player in his career, he's had the inability to stay fully healthy. Even with the injury history, it was a risk Nico Harrison was willing to take, partially due to some concerns about Doncic's conditioning problems.

Although Davis was strong in his Mavericks debut by recording 26 points and 16 rebounds, he suffered a non-contact injury. Now, the Mavericks are unsure of when Davis can return to the lineup as they are struggling to maintain a record over .500.

If Davis is out for a significant period of time, the Mavericks' defense will hurt big time as they'll be without Davis' ability to defend the paint, block shots, and grab defensive rebounds. The offense will take just as much of a blow with Davis not on the court.

The attention of the Mavericks offense will shift to Irving and Thompson due to a true big man scorer out. The Mavericks have already suffered countless injuries this season with their big men, and now the newest big man is out, who's an elite scorer.

Davis out of the lineup can cause the Mavericks to fall in the standings without his offensive and defensive presence. Not having Doncic is bad enough, but now having Davis out makes the trade look even worse with every game played for the Mavericks.
