Why Dallas Mavericks should trade for Danny Green: 4. Versatility

Acquiring Green would allow the Mavericks to keep their options open. In his career, the 33-year-old has played primarily as a shooting guard (59 percent of his minutes) according to Basketball-Reference. This season he shifted to getting the majority of his run at the three and playing more four. He did not log a minute at shooting guard during the 2019-2020 season so far.

That versatility would help the Mavs. They are still attempting to decide what their best option is going forward. Kristaps Porzingis started the year playing primarily at the four. After Dwight Powell’s injury, he moved to the five and flourished. The front office needs to decide what his primary position will be long-term. Fans can read more on this topic here.

The Mavericks’ best playoff lineup features Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis surrounded by three floor spacers. Ideally, all three can defend on the perimeter. It allows the Mavs to hide Doncic a bit to conserve his energy and let him crash the glass.

Adding Green gives Dallas the versatility to use him at the two, three, or four in these lineups. A closing lineup of Doncic, Porzinigs, Seth Curry, Green, and Dorian Finney-Smith would give the opposition nightmares on both ends of the floor.
