Grading Dallas Mavericks center Dwight Powell’s 2019-2020 season

The Dallas Mavericks have watched Dwight Powell blossom. They acquired him from the Celtics in 2014. Powell was in the midst of his rookie season. He played a total of nine minutes for Boston. His role was small even after joining the Mavs, but it grew each season. Powell finally became a full-time starter this year in his sixth NBA season.

Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle was still playing the matchups, though. Powell averaged 26.5 minutes per game. He would play next to Kristaps Porzingis, but the Mavericks would go small when the situation called for it. They also used Maxi Kleber next to KP for his superior defense depending on the opponent.

In many ways, Powell was having a career year. He set new highs in minutes, field goal percentage, rebounds, and steals. The 28-year-old continued to prove that his hard work was paying off. The Mavericks were also 25-15 in the 40 games he played this season.

Unfortunately, his year came to an abrupt end on Jan. 21. Powell fell to the floor untouched as he attempted to drive to the basket. It was evident he was seriously injured. The team quickly determined it was a torn Achilles. DP had surgery and is hoping to be ready for the start of the 2020-2021 season. He recently discussed his rehab in an Instagram Live chat.
