Dallas Mavericks newcomer Kristaps Porzingis was filmed shooting during practice on Feb. 21, and the former All-Star barely missed.

The Dallas Mavericks took a massive swing in trading for Kristaps Porzingis at the end of January. The 7’3 big man from Latvia was an All-Star in 2018 and is still only 23 years old. He is recovering from a torn ACL, though. The Mavericks definitely took on some risk when you couple Porzingis’ injury with the cost (Dennis Smith Jr. and two future first round picks) to acquire him.

Shortly after the trade, news broke that Kristaps would not play at all this season. That means he enters restricted free agency this summer after missing a full year-plus of action. The Mavs are likely to offer a max deal, and that remains a risky move despite Porzingis’ talent.

Dallas Mavericks fans should not fret, though. Acquiring a 23-year-old All-Star to pair with your teenage superstar Luka Doncic was always going to be costly. The organization is building a contender, and they have the two cornerstones on their roster now.

Porzingis is shooting

The injury news on Porzingis is also positive. Below is a video of him shooting on Feb. 21 courtesy of the Mavs official Twitter account.

Kristaps Porzingis makes four out of five 3-pointers in that clip. Remember the 7’3 big man hit 39.5 percent from deep last season in his 48 games for the Knicks. It did not stop there, though.

In subsequent videos posted by Brad Townsend and Isaac Harris, Porzingis went eight of 11 from all over the court. He was working on his pull-ups as well. Kristaps does not look bothered by the knee injury and is likely trying to regain some extra strength before returning to NBA action next season.

Final thoughts

Dallas Mavericks building block Kristaps Porzingis may not play this season, but he was shooting the lights out during a workout on Feb. 21. Although not the first time, it was a welcomed sight to see Porzingis gets some work in and shooting well. Mavs fans cannot wait for the Luka and Kristaps pairing in Dallas.

The Mavericks are likely to be active this summer in trying to add pieces around their young core. Expect the organization to be players on the top names. They would love to bring another All-Star to Dallas to round out the Mavs big three. Stay tuned.
