Dallas Mavericks fans have faced plenty of rumors surrounding point guard Dennis Smith Jr. Here is a look at three reasons why the Mavs should keep him.

The Dallas Mavericks are facing a difficult situation with Dennis Smith Jr. The second-year point guard was the Mavs prized lottery selection in 2017. He has started all 98 games in his career. DSJ has the athleticism and potential to blossom into one of the NBA’s best point guards.

The problem arises after the Mavericks selected Luka Doncic in the 2018 draft. Doncic instantly became the face of the franchise and is taking the league by storm as a 19-year-old rookie. Luka is also best with the ball in hands as the primary creator. That means Smith Jr. is forced into a role off the ball or as a sixth man.

This issue has been the root of the recent drama surrounding the Mavericks. DSJ has been away from the team because his camp wants a trade where he can be the point guard. They believe that is how Smith Jr. maximizes his potential and earning power. The Mavs want to make the fit work between their two young talents, but both players need to be on board with that plan.

DSJ missed six consecutive games but has now returned to the team. That means the situation can potentially be mended and things can work out long-term with both Doncic and Smith Jr. in Dallas. There are no guarantees, though.
