Dallas Mavericks rookie Luka Doncic continues to receive praise from the stars of the NBA and Damian Lillard became the latest one after their Dec. 23 game.

The Dallas Mavericks made a furious comeback on Sunday to force overtime on the second of a back-to-back against the Portland Trail Blazers. They ultimately fell 121-118 in an exhilarating contest for Mavs fans.

Luka Doncic once again played a starring role for the Mavericks. He dropped 23 points with 11 rebounds, six assists, two 3-pointers made, and just one turnover in 35 minutes.

Luka also hit the shot that had the NBA buzzing to force overtime. Fans can relive it again here courtesy of the Mavs official Twitter.

Doncic continues to be unbelievable in clutch situations. The 19 year old has the skill and confidence of an NBA star. Mavs fans are loving the early returns from Luka.

Lillard praises Doncic

Blazers point guard and three-time All-Star Damian Lillard is impressed by the Slovenian rookie. He threw some massive respect Luka’s way after the game. The Trail Blazers official Twitter even shared his quote in the Tweet below.

It is astonishing how Luka Doncic is not only playing like a veteran, but a star. He is averaging 19.0 points per game on the year with 6.6 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 1.1 steals per game in 32.5 minutes a night.

Fans may be surprised that only nine players are averaging at least 18.5 points, six rebounds, and four assists per game this season. If you add in at least one steal per game that number drops to seven. Every man on that list has an All-Star appearance under his belt, but Doncic.

Hopefully, the impressive play continues, and Luka makes his first All-Star team. The 19-year-old deserves the honor, but it is rare for a rookie to make the squad. Fans will need to get out and vote for Doncic if they want to see him in the game. Time will tell if Luka makes the cut.

Final thoughts

Blazers All-Star point guard Damian Lillard lauded Dallas Mavericks rookie Luka Doncic after their battle on Dec. 23. It is scary for the rest of the NBA to think that Doncic may improve significantly. He is likely at least three years away from his prime. Now, other factors can derail that train, but Luka could legitimately be a top-ten player in the league a few seasons down the line.

Think about that tasty thought Mavericks fans. The rookie should have fans salivating about the future. The team should only improve as well. The front office will build the team around Doncic. That should improve both his play and the team’s win total. Buckle up because it is going to a fun ride for Dallas Mavericks supporters everywhere.
