After missing all of last season with a tibia fracture, Seth Curry has returned to basketball activities.

Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Twitter Wednesday afternoon that the long-awaited return of Seth Curry might be just around the corner. The Dallas Mavericks’ guard has been medically cleared for a month, in which he’s been “engaged in full basketball-related activities.”

Although Curry is a free agent this summer, the Mavericks could look to re-sign the 27 year old guard. In his one season with Dallas, Curry put up career-best numbers, averaging 12.8 points, 2.7 assists and 2.6 rebounds.

The Mavericks have a bit of an overloaded guard rotation at the moment with J.J. Barea, Yogi Ferrell, Curry and newly drafted Jalen Brunson. Dallas already extended a qualifying offer to Ferrell earlier this week, making him a restricted free agent, and Barea is under contract for another season. If Dallas wants to spend money elsewhere then they could let Curry walk, but when healthy, Curry provides a spark off the bench that Dallas needs.

Dallas might have already shown their cards by making Ferrell a restricted free agent, meaning that bringing Curry back might not be in their free agency plans. It’s hard to say what kind of market Curry will demand in free agency, so the price will have to be right for the Mavs.

In the final year of his contract, Curry made over $3 million, but coming off a season-ending injury might shrink his free agency pool, making Dallas a viable option. Dallas’ interest in Curry could depend on what they do at the center position. If they are going after DeMarcus Cousins or Clint Capela, it could significantly impact how the Mavericks spend their money in July.

However, if Dallas whiffs on the players at the top of their list, and add a center on an expiring contract, or work out a sign and trade for DeAndre Jordan, then there could be some room to bring Curry back. A lot of decisions ride on what the Mavs first move is once the clock strikes midnight on June 30th.
