Zaccharie Risacher trade suggests Mavericks' new front office remembers his peak

The Dallas Mavericks were so enticed by the potential of former Atlanta Hawks top pick Zaccharie Risacher that they took on the responsibility of resurrecting his career.

One of the first big moves the new-look Dallas Mavericks made with Masai Ujiri, Mike Schmitz, and Dusty May in place as the new power structure was acquiring the 2024 No. 1 overall pick. Risacher has some fans in the building, as Schmitz is already on the record as a fan of his.

Schmitz was scouting Risacher way back when he was a 16-year-old prospect in France during the 2021 season, noting his upside and room to grow. Schmitz's glowing praise for Risacher can't be ignored. Even when considering his past as an analyst who fires off takes, Schmitz's effusive heralding of Risacher may have played a part in the Mavericks bringing him to town.

Risacher's combination of shooting and defensive upside is what pushed him to the top of the 2024 Draft, which is still an achievement despite the relative lack of quality in that class. Risacher is far from an Anthony Bennett-type pick where the evaluation was just a whiff. Schmitz and Dallas see the vision of what a developed Risacher can look like.

Not only did Schmitz previously hold Risacher in very high regard, but Ujiri's tenure with the Toronto Raptors was littered with players who were picked high in the NBA Draft, yet didn't pan out in their original cities. Ujiri has often bet on the talent, though results on those bets have been quite mixed.

The concerning thing when evaluating Risacher is the fact that he started to regress in his second season. Risacher went from averaging 12.6 points per game as a rookie and finishing second in Rookie of the Year voting to mustering just 9.6 points per game and taking a step back on defense.

Still, he has only just turned 21 years old, and his 46/36 shooting splits are by no means unworkable.

Risacher has one of two paths he can take during his first season in Dallas. He could start the year as a bench gunner who provides instant offense and shooting. If Dusty May wants to get creative, or if Morez Johnson Jr. is unable to compete for a starting role, Flagg could play more like a smaller power forward while Risacher moves to the wing.

Mavericks fans also must remember that P.J. Washington could be in the mix to start next season, regardless of this offseason's trade rumors, and he may remain in the starting lineup as well.

Even though any thought of Risacher being a transformative franchise player has likely faded away, the Mavericks seem to believe that giving up on someone with his raw talent as soon as Atlanta did was not a particularly wise move that could come back to bite them.
