Vsevolod Ischchenko has taken great strides for the Dallas Mavericks in the Summer League. He finally showed flashes of his shooting that made him so great in Russia during Dallas' most recent game. Ischchenko had his best performance of Summer League on Thursday, scoring 12 points and making both of his 3-point attempts. It was proof that his 3-point jumper is something that fans don't need to worry about anymore.
Ischchenko's slow shooting start was a bit concerning
The 6-foot-8 wing struggled to fully win over many Mavs fans in his first couple of games, as he hadn't made a 3-point shot before Thursday's game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. They knew that he was a good shooter in Russia, but there were some real early doubts that his jumper would translate.
He seemed hesitant to shoot the ball in the first three games, and he wasn't letting it fly from beyond the arc. Seva was making plays and hustling, but his offensive game seemed a step behind. His 3-point jumper quickly became the biggest doubt about his game because of these things.
Everything, though, changed against the Thunder when he finally shot the ball with confidence and at a high level. He erased doubt about his jumper at the perfect time. If he hadn't made a three during Summer League, fans would be worried about his jumper until training camp in September.
This is a positive sign for Dallas, as he will be even more dangerous once he finally unleashes his 3-point jumper.
Ischchenko's game can easily find success in the NBA
The Mavericks acquired Vsevolod Ischchenko on draft night, after trading for the draft rights to the 56th pick. Recently, he has shown the ability to excel in the NBA, as his Summer League performance thus far is a testament to how his skills can translate to the league.
One thing that has stood out is his strength and physicality. He has shown the ability to face challenges head-on defensively, fearlessly guarding his assignment. He's not afraid of contact on either end of the court. This has allowed him to get buckets inside and fight for rebounds down low.
Another thing that has stood out is his passing skills. He has been an excellent connector for Dallas. He had three assists in his first game and then dished out four assists in his second performance. Seva has proven to be a skilled passer, as he knows how to find the open teammate and make the right decisions.
Yet, despite his development during the summer, there was one thing missing: his 3-point shot. The Russian wing was known for his long-range jumper overseas, and fans were waiting for him to show off his shot for Dallas. Ischchenko silenced the doubters on Thursday when he made both of his 3-pointers. It was the nail in the coffin, proving he can excel at the next level.
Ischchenko can help solve Dallas' shooting struggles
Last season, the Dallas Mavericks were one of the worst 3-point shooting teams in the league. They ranked near the bottom of the league in 3-point percentage and 3-pointers made per game, and their offense became far too one-dimensional. The issue was that they lacked outside shooting and failed to provide Cooper Flagg with any help to solve their biggest weakness.
This is why Dallas needed to draft Ischchenko. He's a strong shooter from Russia, whose past numbers made him a viable solution to help solve the Mavericks' weakness.
During his time in the VTB United League, the young wing became an efficient shooter. He shot nearly 50 percent overall and made just over 46 percent on his attempted 3-pointers for Lokomotiv Kuban last season.
It's why Mavs fans were so excited to see him in Summer League, as the expectation was that he would showcase some of his shooting touch from Russia. The fanbase got a sample of his dangerous shooting against the Thunder when he drained multiple attempts off the catch.
