The Dallas Mavericks are in a pretty awkward position heading into this year’s deadline, especially when it comes to Anthony Davis. There were some rumblings that Rich Paul, Davis’ agent, requested that the Mavs trade him before the deadline. However, Paul now says that’s now true:

“I know what was said. That thing was aggregated,” Paul said on his podcast. “This is the power of the internet. If you’re wondering why Rich Paul has a podcast, this is part of the reason why… The reality of it is, that’s fake news. When you have a player that’s on a team, it’s not like you want guys to move for the sake of being moved. If a guy is happy where they are, great.

“You care about people’s family, you care about the guys well being, and you care if they’re happy. From a business perspective, you want guys to be paid. I really don’t care where the money comes from, the money can come from the 31st team in the NBA for all I care. Long as my guy is in position to get paid, that’s all I want to do… this idea I don’t want a player somewhere, that’s not true.”

Rich Paul chiming in to Anthony Davis talks is frustrating

This is the sort of stuff that should frustrate Mavs fans.

Dallas has had a tumultuous last year. The Luka Doncic trade completely shook the fanbase, and they should be understandably cautious with trusting the new front office.

Whatever deal they end up making that ships out Davis will be a crucial part of the future of the franchise. They need to do everything they can to maximize the return they get, which already isn’t looking great, based on his injury and age.

But all of this speculation regarding Paul’s statements are a complete headache, and one that Mavs fans should be pretty fed up with at this point, considering the emotional roller coaster they’ve been on lately.

Not only does Dallas have to navigate an impossible situation—trying to trade a guy who can barely stay on the court, and one for whom it gave up its beloved franchise superstar—but now, his agent is constantly weighing in.

At this point, it’s unclear whether or not the Mavs will find a trade for Davis by this year’s deadline. They probably want to, but it could be difficult.

But no matter what way you spin it, having an agent who is constantly chiming in on things has to be a headache.
