The Dallas Mavericks need one more spot for their 15-man roster. They lost Derrick Jones Jr. and Tim Hardaway Jr. but made acquisitions of Quentin Grimes, Naji Marshall, and Klay Thompson.

However, one more roster spot is left. One player who Mavs fans would love to bring back is veteran Markieff Morris. But, Morris would be a wasted roster spot at 34 years old who wouldn't play much as he played in 26 games last season.

The Mavs would be better signing a free agent who can play more games and still hasn't reached his full potential. That player is someone who previously played with Grimes in Detroit and is a former 2020 first-round draft pick.

Malachi Flynn would give the Mavs needed backcourt depth

The Mavericks move for the 15th roster spot is signing 26-year-old Malachi Flynn. There were rumors at the start of free agency that the Mavs were interested in Flynn.

So why should Dallas be interested in Flynn? It would help the Mavs get back court depth, which the team needs more of. Flynn is also a good ball-handler. Signing Flynn would also give him a chance to show his full potential with a new team, and a fresh start could be needed for Flynn as the 2023-24 season was a bumpy road for him.

Flynn started the 2023-24 season with the Raptors, was then traded to the Knicks, and then was traded a third time to the Pistons. With the Pistons, Flynn seemed to fit well on a terrible team.

In 24 games coming off the bench, Flynn averaged eight points per game. His potential was shown heavily in April when he posted a career-high 50 points.

A key thing is not wasting a roster spot with another veteran with the 15th roster spot. Despite Morris being loved, Dallas already has a veteran presence with Dwight Powell.

Powell played 63 games last season and was an outstanding leader for the Mavericks. The Mavs don't necessarily need Morris back, as he would mainly play in garbage time. It would be better for Dallas to sign a player like Flynn, who can play immediately.

One more roster spot is available for the Mavericks. If the Mavs want a guard who can provide back court depth, still show his potential with a new team, Flynn would be a solid player for the Mavericks roster.
