NBA champion's unbelievable Kyrie Irving take shows how lucky the Mavericks are
By Jake Ferraro
When Kyrie Irving played his first season in the NBA with the Cleveland Cavaliers, pressure was immediately placed on him at 19 years old. Coming out of Duke, Irving was the first pick in the 2011 NBA Draft and was eager to take the NBA by storm.
Irving lived up to the first overall pick as he won the 2012 Rookie of the Year. Four years later, Irving won his first NBA championship in his career and has always been a top point guard in the league, and has exceeded expectations since being traded to the Dallas Mavericks in 2023.
Since Irving has been in Dallas, he has matured a lot, and has been the perfect teammate for Luka Doncic. Irving was a key part of the Mavs' run to the 2024 NBA Finals, and now Irving has been a top name this summer, getting top praise from peers around the league.
From Donovan Mitchell saying Irving is the toughest player to guard, to Damian Lillard saying Irving is the hardest player to guard one-on-one, and now a former NBA champion had an incredible hot take on Irving.
Young's wild Kyrie take shows how lucky the Mavericks are to have him
Nick Young played eight seasons of his career against Irving, and Young had a take on Irving that quickly blew up due to how outlandish it is, but it also shows how excellent of a player Irving is.
For Young to put Irving in the same category with NBA legend Kobe Bryant, and comparing the two of them to Stephen Curry and Michael Jordan, is a crazy thing to say. And, most would argue Curry has had the much better career than Irving. But, Irving has proved in his career how talented he is.
Irving has eight All-Star selections and three All-NBA Team selections. Irving will always be remembered for his clutch Game 7 shot in the 2016 NBA Finals. Irving has also been a member of four NBA Finals teams, with the most recent one being this past season with Dallas.
With all the praise that Irving has gotten this offseason, the Mavs are very fortunate to have him on the team for at least the next year. When Irving was traded to Dallas in February 2023, some thought he wouldn't exceed in Dallas with Doncic. But, Irving has matured well to play well in Dallas.
Heading into the 2024-25 season with the Mavs, Irving is eager to help lead the Mavs back to the Finals. Irving averaged 25.6 points per game and shot an impressive 41 percent from three last season. Having Klay Thompson on the Mavs now who has a bond with Irving, can make the Mavs more dangerous. The two of them alongside Doncic form an impressive big three.
