Luka Doncic and the Mavericks will look to hand the Grizzlies their fourth straight tonight at FedEx Forum.

The 2023-24 NBA season has started on the wrong foot for Memphis, who are without star point guard Ja Morant for 25 games and have lost the first three games by an average of six points per game.

As for the Mavericks, they are off to a 2-0 start, thanks to the heroics of Luka Doncic, who had 49 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists in a five-point win over the Nets on Friday night.

Will Luka's magic continue in Memphis tonight? Or will the Grizzlies finally put it all together and grab their first win of the season?

Mavericks vs. Grizzlies Key Players to Watch

Dallas Mavericks

  • Luka Doncic: The 24-year-old superstar guard has been outstanding to start the season for the Mavericks. In the regular season opener against the Spurs, Doncic had a casual 33-point, 13-rebound, and 10-assist triple-double. He followed up that performance with 49 points against the Nets, including a crazy bank shot in the fourth quarter. Doncic won’t have it easy tonight as he’ll be defended by one of the better perimeter defenders in the league – Marcus Smart, but we should expect some Luka magic in some way, shape, or form.
  • Dereck Lively II: The rookie big man is coming off a quiet performance against the Nets, where he only posted nine points and two rebounds in 17 minutes of action. However, Lively had an eye-opening rookie debut that almost matched what Victor Wembanyama was doing for the Spurs. Lively had his career double-double, posting 16 points and 10 rebounds in 31 minutes against San Antonio. He’s the perfect rim runner for Doncic, and he will be able to get easy points off lobs but grab boards.

Memphis Grizzlies

  • Desmond Bane: With Morant still suspended, Bane has taken over as Memphis’ top-scoring option. The 25-year-old leads the team with 24 points per game despite only shooting 42.4% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc.
  • Jaren Jackson Jr: Jackson Jr. has a lot on his shoulders as the Grizzlies are missing Steven Adams and Santi Aldama. Without Adams and Aldama, Jackson and Xavier Tillman must provide a scoring punch and be competitive on the board. This season, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year is averaging 15 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game.

Mavericks vs. Grizzlies Prediction and Pick

Even though the Mavericks are undefeated heading into tonight’s game, it seems as if oddsmakers doesn’t have a lot of trust in Dallas to get the job done on the road. Tonight will be their second road game this season as they opened up against the Spurs. Dallas wasn’t great on the road last season, with a 15-26 record, which helped them miss the playoffs.

The Mavericks were also 6-13 against the spread as road favorites last year. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies have come up short in all of their games this season, including being outscored in the fourth quarter twice. Memphis plays at a fast pace (102.9 – eighth in the NBA), but it doesn’t help that they have trouble scoring (104.7 points per game – 23rd in the NBA). The Mavericks are scoring 125.2 points per game (second in the league). At the same time, their defense hasn’t been great either.

Could the Grizzlies win tonight at home in an upset? It’s a possibility, but the Mavericks just have too much scoring between Doncic, Kyrie Irving, and Tim Hardaway Jr. Take Dallas and the points!

PICK: Mavericks -1
