Mavericks undervalued in NBA playoff series odds vs. Clippers
By Reed Wallach
The Dallas Mavericks closed the season as good as any team in the NBA, winning 17 of the final 21 games this season to secure the No. 5 seed and a possible second place MVP finish for Luka Doncic.
Dallas enters the postseason in better form than its opponent, the Los Angeles Clippers, who haven’t had Kawhi Leonard for the past eight games as he deals with a knee injury and his status is up in the air for this series.
However, with questions swirling around Los Angeles, the Mavericks are seen as a toss-up against the Clippers.
Since March 1, the Mavericks have been one of the best teams in basketball. The team is 17-4 since then, as mentioned above, and if you filter out Sunday’s clear punt from the roster that resulted in a 49-point loss to the Thunder, the team is fifth in points allowed per 100 possession according to NBA.com.
For all the fanfare around Doncic, who is leading the NBA in scoring this season, it’s been the defense that has hit another gear down the stretch of the season and raises the ceiling of this Mavericks squad.
The mid-season acquisitions of Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington has paid off for Jason Kidd’s group and the team will now face a Clippers team that is 17th in net rating since March 1st while playing 14-11 basketball.
There is no denying the firepower on Los Angeles’ side, as well as home court advantage, but the current form of each team indicates that the Mavericks may be ripe to get past the Pacific Division champions.
