How Spencer Dinwiddie can unlock the Mavericks offense
By Tyler Watts
Dallas Mavericks need to keep Spencer Dinwiddie productive off the ball
Mavs head coach Jason Kidd will need to integrate Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans on the fly. His most difficult task might be finding ways to keep Luka Doncic and Dinwiddie productive when they are playing off the ball.
The Mavericks superstar is one of the best offensive creators in the league, but he is not the most active player without the ball in his hands. Can Kidd find ways to get Luka open looks without the 22-year-old creating them?
Dinwiddie is a strong pick and roll ball-handler that excels when attacking the paint. Can he be productive playing next to Luka? Doncic is going to take the lion’s share of the ball-handling duties, so how can Dinwiddie fit in?
He is shooting just 34.4 percent on catch and shoot threes this season, but the 6’5 guard connected on 37.1 percent of his 294 tries in the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 seasons combined. Jumpers can be slow to come back following ACL surgeries, so Dinwiddie could turn a corner at any moment.
The Dallas Mavericks need Spencer Dinwiddie to be able to knock down catch and shoot 3-pointers when the defense collapses on Luka Doncic. His ability to drive for an easy lay-in against a rotating defense will be massive too. Dinwiddie brings quickness and ability to get all the way to the rim that Dallas has lacked this season, and he could be the key to the Mavericks returning to a top ten offense. Stay tuned to see what impact Dinwiddie makes moving forward.
