Dallas Mavericks depth chart heading into regular season: Shooting guard
Fans can split hairs about which players are shooting guards or small forwards, but the team appears to have three clearly defined units on the wings entering the regular season.
Starter: Tim Hardaway Jr.
Head coach Jason Kidd let Hardaway Jr. make the decision on his role for this season. THJ will be looking to shoot over 40 percent from 3-pointr range after just missing out for two straight seasons and figures to be the team’s third-leading scorer.
Expect coach Kidd to stagger THJ, Luka, and KP’s minutes to keep two of the three on the floor at all times.
Backup: Sterling Brown
The Mavericks signed Brown to a two-year deal this offseason because they wanted to add wing depth, shooting, and defense. The 26-year-old shot 42.3 percent from 3-point range last season and nailed seven of 15 during the preseason. He will play a key role and could be called on for additional minutes in the playoffs if the opposition is going small.
Third-string: Frank Ntilikina
Ntilikina will not be in the nightly rotation, but he remains a strong end of the bench option. His perimeter defense is an elite NBA skill that coach Kidd can call upon in specific situations, but the French Prince will have to expand his offensive game to earn consistent playing time.
