Dallas Mavericks depth chart heading into regular season: Point guard
This is the team’s most set and defined position with superstar Luka Doncic leading the charge.
Starter: Luka Doncic
Head coach Jason Kidd wants Doncic playing off the ball more this season, and fans have seen the fruits during the preseason, but do not expect that to impact the 22-year-old superstar’s numbers. Luka figures to be firmly in the MVP race this season as the Mavs attempt to leap into title contention.
Backup: Jalen Brunson
Brunson was the team’s second-leading scorer during the preseason as he shot 56.7 percent from the field. The 25-year-old looks to have taken another step forward, which should put him in the running for Sixth Man of the Year.
Coach Kidd played Luka and JB together in the backcourt for stretches during the preseason. How much will he turn to that alignment when the games count? It is an easy way to get Doncic off the ball and could become a massive weapon for the Mavericks offense.
Third-string: Trey Burke
The Mavs kept Burke on the roster because he can handle the ball and create shots, which are two things the team desperately needs. The 28-year-old is a strong end of the bench option that can come in and get hot at a moment’s notice.
