The Dallas Mavericks are trying to set up the ultimate battle for Luka Doncic in next year’s preseason, according to owner Mark Cuban. Playing in Slovenia appears to be off the table, but Cuban said the Mavs are trying to face Real Madrid in Spain. The Spanish giants signed Luka when he was 13 years old, and he helped them win three Liga ACB titles and a EuroLeague crown as a teenager before coming to the NBA.

Doncic only played for Real Madrid for six years and departed for the NBA 19 years old, but the Mavericks superstar left an incredible legacy. They knew he was destined for greatness, and now he could be back leading the Mavs against one of the best teams in Europe.

Cuban noted that it was up to the league to make the final call. Usually, two NBA teams travel overseas and play each other. The league might push for that with the teams both facing Real Madrid before squaring off in Spain. Taking a trip overseas did not make sense this year, but next season would be a perfect time.

With EuroBasket running so close to the NBA season, the Mavs wanted to give Luka Doncic a bit of extra rest early this preseason. An overseas trip would have forced Dallas to start earlier and play their superstar earlier than they wanted to. It just did not make sense.

Next year, the FIBA World Cup is the primary international competition, and fans know number 77 will be leading Slovenia if they qualify, but the tournament ends on Sept. 10, which is a full eight days earlier than EuroBasket. Luka will also not have as many games in the lead-up, so he should be fresher for Mavericks training camp.

Mavs versus Real Madrid in Spain is certain to sell out the WiZink Center or any arena. Luka Doncic is the biggest star in Slovenia, and he is a massive celebrity in Spain. Expect fans from all over Europe to try to get tickets as he returns. Supporters have seen and heard the sellouts when he leads the Slovenian National Team. It would be a fantastic atmosphere and one for all of the Dallas Mavericks to enjoy.

Will the game happen? Stay tuned for all the latest.
