The Dallas Mavericks are the hottest team in the league, and superstar Luka Doncic is coming off his best game of the season. The 22-year-old had a season-high 41 points in a win over the Raptors on Jan. 19, and he has led his team to ten victories in their last 11 games. The Mavs are back up to fifth in the Western Conference, and Luka deserves to be an All-Star for the third straight year.
The NBA released their third returns of All-Star fan voting on Jan. 20, and Doncic remains third among West guards with over 1.9 million votes. He trails Stephen Curry and Ja Morant in the balloting in the race to start the All-Star game. Remember, fan voting only counts for 50 percent with the players and the media each getting 25 percent.
Supporters can still vote until Saturday night, and here is a look at why fans should be voting for Luka over Morant to start in the West’s backcourt.
Luka Doncic 3rd among West guards in All-Star fan vote
Morant is having a fantastic season, and he surprisingly has the Grizzlies up to third in the Western Conference, but the numbers suggest Luka is having the superior season. The Mavs superstar is averaging more points, assists, rebounds, blocks, and 3-pointers made per game. Morant has a slight edge in steals and has superior shooting percentages, but Luka has better defensive numbers and the two are virtually tied in value over replacement player and box score plus-minus.
Doncic has a superior track record too. Morant is having a breakout third season, but Luka has been first-team All-NBA the last two years. The Grizzlies guard is deserving All-Star, but Doncic is the superior player that deserves to start the game for the third straight year.
Fans need to get out and vote before Saturday’s deadline. Luka Doncic trails Ja Morant by 700,000 votes, but fans can help him make up that ground. The All-Star starters will be announced on Jan. 27 with the coaches selecting the reserves. Expect Luka to be back in the All-Star game, but it will take a lot of fan votes to push him into the starting five. Let’s make it happen MFFLs.
