Luka Doncic will play for Slovenian National Team in 2023 FIBA World Cup
By Tyler Watts
Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic loves playing for his country in international competitions. He helped them win EuroBasket 2017 before finishing fourth in the 2020 Olympics. Luka was going off in EuroBasket 2022 before Slovenia suffered a shocking upset in the quarterfinals. Doncic wants to help his country win all the biggest tournaments, and he will get another shot next summer.
Slovenia clinched a place in the World Cup without Doncic last week. Luka helped them qualify this summer, but the remaining games took place during the NBA season, so they had to finish the job without their best player. Slovenia earned their spot, and they will be ready to compete against the world’s best teams next summer.
Doncic has already committed to representing his country in the 2023 FIBA World Cup. It should come as no surprise, but here is a look at what the president of Slovenian Basketball Matej Erjavec had to say about Luka playing in the premier event.
Luka Doncic will play for Slovenian National Team in 2023 FIBA World Cup
Doncic wasted zero time in committing to play for his country as Erjavec told RTV in Slovenia.
"Luka confirmed his participation a minute after the game with Germany, when it was certain that we would go to the championship."
The World Cup is the second-biggest FIBA competition in the four-year calendar behind the Olympics. Slovenia has never won a medal at the World Cup, and Doncic plans on changing that next summer.
The 23-year-old superstar is committed to growing the game in Slovenia, and he always wants to represent his country. Remember, Doncic could have played for Spain, but he chose to stick with his home nation as he attempts to put them on the basketball map. Slovenia failed to qualify for the 2019 World Cup, but they finished seventh in 2014 before Doncic was on the squad.
Luka Doncic will not be happy unless Slovenia wins the 2023 FIBA World Cup, and fans know he will put on a show for his country. It will be cannot miss television, so be sure to tune in next summer and enjoy the games.
