Is Kyrie Irving playing today? Injury updates for Mavericks vs Spurs on April 9

Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving sat out as the franchise was eliminated from postseason contention on Friday evening. The franchise prioritized keeping their draft pick over pushing for their slim hopes of reaching the Play-In Tournament, which meant putting Kyrie and others on the bench.

The NBA opened an investigation on the Mavericks for tanking, but that did not stop them from planning to rest six rotation players in Sunday’s season finale against the San Antonio Spurs. Dallas can lock in the tenth-worst record with a loss, and give themselves a 79.8 percent chance of keeping their draft pick, which they owe to the Knicks from the original Kristaps Porzingis trade if it falls 11 through 30.

Will Kyrie Irving play in Dallas Mavericks vs. San Antonio Spurs on April 9?

Irving was ruled out for Sunday’s contest because of right foot injury recovery. The 31-year-old is healthy but will sit on April 9.

Luka Doncic (thigh), Josh Green (rest), Reggie Bullock (rest), Tim Hardaway Jr. (ankle), and Maxi Kleber (hamstring) all join Kyrie as out for Sunday’s game. Others will likely only play in the first half.

The Spurs did not release an official injury report because they are on the second night of a back-to-back set.

Kyrie Irving's injury history

Kyrie was limited to 80 possible games played this season because of the trade, but he missed 20. This is the first time Irving has topped 60 games played since 2019. He has played in more than 60 just once in the last six seasons, which should be a concern if the Mavericks sign him to a long-term deal this summer.

Will Kyrie Irving pair with Luka Doncic tonight?

Both superstars are out as the Mavs attempt to improve their draft positioning on Sunday afternoon. Kyrie will likely take the spring and summer off as he prepares for free agency. Fans can watch Luka play for the Slovenian National Team this summer.
